Deacs v. Spiders Game Thread

Nikita's lack of basketball IQ is unrivaled. He is the worst. He's like everything bad about Josh Shoemaker and Ricky Peral in one player.

You're leaving his Viduretta like speed out of the equation.

I don't know about this. It looked like Richmond was about to ASU us and we came back and fought. That's a big deal for a team this young.

Im sorry but this Richmond team is nearly as young as us (two seniors who combined average 10 ppg) and they came into our building off their 4th straight road game (3-1 in that stretch) and took it to us for 80% of the game. The youth excuse really is wearing thin on me.

We are far from that level b/c of the talent difference. There isn't a coach in the country that could coach the cluster that DINO brought in and put us in the top 15 right now. Bz isn't a bad coach. He may not be the long-term answer, but I see a team with mediocre talent that has improved substantially from last year. Give credit where credit is due.

Do you honestly believe that Buzz can get us anywhere close to that level? Nothing on his resume suggests that we will be relevant in the next decade that he is our coach. I have compared Buzz to Sendek, but I don't think that Buzz can even achieve Sendek's success.

We're a borderline top 100 team now (my point of view not based on kenpom or rpi). That's a major improvement. Unless we were going to hire John Callipari we weren't going to be good for a couple of years.

I think that's right. I think we finish the season somewhere around 100 in the kenpom rankings.

I disagree with this point because there is a huge difference between buzz and knight, Williams, coach k, callipari. A great coach finds ways to coach the players they inherit

I can live with this. It's not like last year when I actually tried to be out of the house when we were playing so as to not see the carnage. We have to play near perfect to beat any team worth a damn but right now I can still delude myself thinking that we're going to steal a few ACC games and be a middle of the pack team next year.

We were down 52-29 mid second half, then went to a full court press. Richmond started turning it over, and we started getting it to Travis on every possession with good results. Had the lead down to 5 in the final minute, but the two threes Richmond hit in the final minutes were daggers.

Richmond benefitted from a missed offensive goal tending call. On the same play, the shooter clearly charged but it was called a block.

Ended the game on a 33-18 run.

Explain in depth please, a loss to an A-10 team is a loss.

Obviously we all want wins

But would you rather lose to A-10 by 30 or A-10 by 8

I think BZZZZ is a shit coach and not right for Wake, BUT I will give him credit for convincing our shitty roster to play with heart

Good work, Buzz. You have moved the goalposts.

This is true. While I don't think anything other than a top notch coach would get this current roster to even sniff the tourney, I just do not see Buzz as anyone that could get us anywhere higher than the NIT in coming years.

Facepalm

You're really the worst kind of fan, DV7. There are plenty of reasons to criticize this team and this game but you haven't spoken to any of them.

What stands out to me is that we came out flat and our off-the-ball movement was pretty lousy (which is equal parts TC-not-seeing and our guys not moving). Our defensive rotations were also miserable for most of the Richmond run and even down the stretch, which again seems equally because of bad awareness and guys not knowing where they need to be. A team like Richmond, which runs a very set-heavy half-court offense, is going to make us look like that if we're not maximizing our potential on defense.

Bzz in particular deserves credit for motivating these guys and making a stagnant offense look less stagnant. He also deserves credit for his substitutions. All excellent.

Blowing that timeout was bad, though, and possibly cost us the game. So, too, did our seeming lack of preparation to contain the little guy in the first half.

All in all, I'm happy that we fought back and this should serve as a motivational tool for us moving forward when we fall behind early.

RECRUITING

There are four players in North Carolina with whom we are involved.

Freeman, Gill, Meeks, and McClinton. We need to sign some people.

Chenault definitely needs to go and maybe Green and Fields.

We have to recognize that this is the least talent WAKE has ever put on the floor. Ever.

Deacon basketball, it's better than gonorrhea! Seriously we're going in the right direction, its a question of how far in that direction we go and at what speed.

Well, I agree, Bz isn't on the level of those coaches. But those coaches couldn't take the team Bz inherited and make them a top 15 team either. We aren't on the level of UNC or UK because we don't have the talent, not necessarily because of Bz.
