The Jeff [Redacted] Show

When you don't have any rebounders on your squad, you don't get rebounds.

Travis is a decent rebounder but he's only decent rebounder.

A coach has to look at his roster and decide what his strengths are and try to maximize the abilities of the team.

Travis is actually having a pretty down year on the boards. I have to disagree, RJ.

He's grabbing just 5.3 rebounds per 40 minutes pace adjusted this year vs. 9.4 last year, good for 18.6% of Wake's rebounds. Last year, he was grabbing 23.7% of our rebounds.

In context, it's still awful:
NCAA SF/PF Prospects Comparative Stats

Everybody on our team, with the exception of Green, has a pretty embarrassing rebounding rate...

I really enjoyed seeing our head basketball coach get in his Prius while wearing a jumpsuit the other day on campus. Proud to have him as the coach...

Also funny given the iPad sig.

Does [Redacted] have one iota of personality. Has he not done one thing in a year and a half to try to connect with the students, fans, or media. To me he is a stick in the mud and if this is the culture he brings to Wake, I would prefer another culture. Plus, I have never heard a head coach so willing to repeatedly throw his own players under the bus. How can a coach be asked why his team seemed to come out flat, and his response is, I don't know - you will have to ask the players".

Probably the most damning of all the complaints ...

Never heard a top coach take this approach. Usually, the line for public consumption is that players win games, and coaches lose them. We know Bz doesnt endorse the latter philosophy, and we dont have much experience with the former under his watch.

I guess time will tell.

This is not true, and there have been multiple threads debunking this. You can say those other coaches are more successful and thus have the "right" to do it, but a lot of coaches show public frustration with players.

Our team's rebounding fundamentals are poor and there isn't a one of them out there with serious desire. Put that together and you will always be the second one to the ball.

Bill Self after a win last week over LBSU

"Our offense sucks," Self said. "We are the worst passing team I've ever seen. It's ridiculous to watch."

"That was about as miserable of a performance in the last 10 minutes of a game as I've ever seen," Self said. "You can look up and down the lineup and there is just nobody that values the ball at all. That was a game we had won several times, but our inability to think, pass, catch or execute at all in late-game situations was the reason the game was close late."

Not really sure what your point is here. The posts above (at least mine) are focused on accepting responsibility for outcomes, not whether coaches express frustration with players. Of course they express frustration with players. However, the better coaches consistently embrace responsibility for results. If their team loses, or doesnt execute to their satisfaction, few place primary responsibility on their players. They say they need to do a better job of preparing their team. We dont hear enough of that from Bz IMO. Feel free to disagree.

Further, I was extremely impressed with Mick Cronin for the way he accepted responsibility for his players' actions at the end of the game with X. He could have said that they were thugs and idiots (many would have agreed with that assessment) but he took responsibility because he was the head coach. I was impressed by that.

Not really sure what my point is? You said you've never heard a top coach express some blame towards players. This is wrong. You can peruse this collection but I don't know if you consider Turgeon, Izzo, Weber, Self or Roy top coaches.

Also, I know Bz has said some things about players that he might wish he could have back, but in no way have I seen a repeated pattern of shirking responsibility.

you're comparing the pilot of a .747 to a guy who quit AFA after 2 years .

OK. I understand your confusion. I never said I've "never heard a top coach express some blame towards players" as you claim. That would be a ridiculous statement. I have a problem with a head coach not embracing responsibility for less than desirable outcomes. I especially didnt care for Bz deflecting responsibility for the flat start. Point out the problems with your team, but own the responsibility for fixing it. My issue was with the quote I highlighted,

"How can a coach be asked why his team seemed to come out flat, and his response is, I don't know - you will have to ask the players."

I did not go into a lot of detail about my concern in my first post because I typically dont elaborate on negative points. You read something into my post that was not there, probably due to my brevity. I'm sure you will go back and reread my post. Hope this clarification and the one above helps.

I see. My confusion came from you saying "I have never heard a top coach take this approach". That line takes for granted that Bz's SOP is to shirk responsibility, which is a damning claim. I don't like that quote, but plenty of coaches have similar, or worse quotes. I don't think Bz is especially harsh on players. It is something to fuel the fire though with how much people dislike him.

The record is pass attempts in a half in NCAA history I believe...either 56 or 57. Surprised nobody has called in and gotten it yet.

Wow I missed that...Rusty went 55-78 in a game. Could have sworn he set a record for pass attempts in a half too though.
