Best Coaching Job in WF BB History

That team was talented. Skip, Rod, and the best player not to have his jersey hanging, Frank Johnson (as I continue my personal crusade to honor Frank and have that injustice corrected).

Shaq was nowhere near the college player Tim was and wasn't there for four years.

I love the Admiral but he was abused by Soviet "amateur" Sabonis.

What does Purdue have to do with anything?

Glenn Big Dog Robinson is why he wrote Purdue.

The reason Wake or LSU didn't dominate college hoops the way Georgetown did with Ewing in my opinion was because Ewing didn't play during the three point era. When that came into effect in the 1986-87 season teams with dominate big men were less imposing and guard play became the number one priority in sustained postseason success.

Well I guess keeper knows more than Jerry West who said Duncan was the #1 pick from around Xmas of his soph season.

The potential I spoke of is why he said that. Duncan did not even win ROY IIRC.

1962 - We finished third in the nation. Enough said.
1984
1996
1995

In that order.

We were a Yale free throw away from being upset in the first round in 1962. Glad he missed it.

He was good but he wasn't anything like Tim.

Good point.

P.S. Patrick playing against a team of MJ, Worthy and Perkins didn't help....and they made at least two Final Fours with Patrick.

From beginning to end 1994 was probably Odom's best coaching job. It set the stage for 95 and 96. He won ACC coach of the year that year (one of three times I believe). Had to deal with Makhtar and Peral eligibility issues, had a 17 year old center along with Trelonnie and Scooter and the rest were guards (albeit very good ones) with Childress, Harrison, Blucas and Rusty. The loss in the ACC tourney semis to UNC in OT was one of the most painful ever to me. Then in the round of 32 game against Kansas they shoved Randolph into the press table and he basically played that game with one arm and Tre had has worst shooting game ever.

as a sophomore glenn robinson averaged 24.1 and 9.4
as a junior glenn robinson averaged 30.3 and 11.2

glenn robinson was, without a doubt, at least as good as tim in college.

Yep, only ncaa tourney ive ever been to in my life. Went went the folks, lexington,ky. Lost by 7 to ostertagg , vaughn and kansas. Was still an awesome experience and one i will never forget. Oh and i do consider myself an wake bball expert so ill tell ya the top three wake teams of all time. 1.1962
2.1995, 3. 1996. The 77 team just edges out the 84 team for fourth. Childrees doesnt get hurt/sick in 95 we go to the final four.

getting to the final 8 in 96 without our starting PG was pretty nice

The guy's name was Schumacher....and it was Chappell's 5th foul, too. We had the ball with a timeout in a tie game & only a few seconds to play. The idea was to throw it in deep to Chappell, but he got called for charging trying to get to the ball. The free throw rolled off the rim and we had to sweat about two seconds hoping there wouldn't be a follow-up. Then we had to play the OT without Chappell....but sub Tommy McCoy came thru big for us.

However, we still wouldn't have made the Final Four if it wasn't for Billy Packer's heroics in the very next game in the regional at Cole Fieldhouse against St Joe. We were six down with a minute to play. Chappell hit two free throws to cut it to 4, then Packer made a jumper with less than 30 seconds left to cut it to 2. After the Hawks missed a one-and-one with about 15 seconds left, Packer hit a buzzer-beating jumper to send it to overtime again...and again, Tommy McCoy made some key baskets in OT.

That was 50 years ago this March.....and I still remember it like it was yesterday.

I was at Cole and Freedom Hall. Watched Yale on TV. Nervous.

Whatever it is, it certainly hasn't been since I showed up on campus in 2006.

Since 1997 actually. But I nominate the 1995-96 season after the loss of Randolph to graduation.

I nominate as the 2 worst season as 2005 w/ CP3 & right after he left--2006 when we dropped to dead last with the "best" all time recruiting class in the history of Wake Forest basketball

here is an SAT analogy:

[Redacted] is to DV& as _____ is to The Reff...

The answer is Skip. Reff didn't like Skip and the feeling was mutual. How anyone could get Skip not to like them is mindboggling.

That team was talented....but what many people do not realize is that it was, for the most part, a team of unknown, raw talent players that nobody else wanted whom Carl Tacy found & developed into top-notch ACC players. In the early to mid-70s, in particular, Tacy had to take the "leftovers" & unknown talents that the Carolina & Duke's didn't want. Rod Griffin wanted to play for Carolina, but Dean Smith didn't offer him a scholarship. Guys like Jerry Schellenberg, Leroy McDonald, Delaney Rudd, Anthony Teachey & Danny Young, to name a few, weren't even on the radar in the recruiting efforts by the big name schools. I don't even think that Skip Brown was very heavily recruited. Former Deac Bob Leonard might have helped us get him (I don't know this for a fact), since both were from Dobyns Bennett HS in Kingsport, Tn...as was Lee Garber later. That Tacy could find guys like these and develop them into the kind of players they became is just another indication of what a great coach he was.

Not true with Danny Young. NC State, Duke and UNC recruited him. UNC did everything but offer as they were waiting on someone else. Duke and NC State were without coaches . I remember Coach Tacy giving Danny a drop dead date or we were going elsewhere. UNC didn't offer and State and Duke had nobody in place to make an offer by the drop dead date. Smart move by Coach Tacy. Tennessee heavily recruited Skip and Virginia Tech recruited him hard. During his official visit here we were playing Virginia Tech. Don DeVoe sent Sonny Smith, an assistant coach, to sit beside Skip during the game. Classless move since it was our home game. I've never seen Coach Tacy as mad. I remember Skip's mouth flying open when Tacy blew out Sonny Smith.

Larry Harrison was highly recruited.

Fran McCaffery was highly recruited.

The infamous Charlie Floyd was Top 15 in the country.

OK, scratch those guys. Who was recruiting Rod Griffin, Anthony Teachey, Delaney Rudd, Leroy McDonald & Jerry Schellenberg?

I think we beat Pembroke State for Rod Griffin. Teachey and Rudd we had East Carolina for both as rivals as I recall. Whenever we played NC State when Rudd was introduced he would give a short polite point to Jim Valvano. I asked him why he did that . He said he wanted to go to State but Valvano never offered a scholarship.

Yes, the first time we were ever ranked no. 1 in the country was the same year of the worst coaching job in WF basketball history. Brilliant.

Also, basketball recruiting was a different animal back then. It was much more localized and much easier to find diamonds in the rough.
