deacvision,
Recent history suggests I'm $20 up on you. How spot on is that?
At this point, history ain't got nothin' to do with it. History says Bzd has the single greatest turn around, record-wise in the history of the NBA, actually I think it was the second greatest turn around, but that isn't going to help him win games at Wake Forest.
History says he did okay at Air Force but couldn't recruit squat and he did pretty good at Colorado given where he started. Again, triangulating the history of those three places is not going to get you spot on to anything. Unless you're the cum stain on Lewinsky's dress (which you are starting to resemble from my spot, deacvision) the spot ain't sticking.
The question is now, given an ACC coaching job at a top 40 program and a AD that has your back, what is your ceiling? Not so much as a coach but as the head of a program? And what's your ceiling starting with an 8-win season, which I would argue is far more relevant than anything Bzd has done over the last 30 years in basketball.
His 2012 class, whether with great thanks to Coach Battle and staff or augmented by Coach Battle and staff, is a great great start. It sets, at minimum, a ceiling of playing in the NCAAs. If his ceiling is the Final 8, he's got a job at Wake until he wants to go. If he makes a Sweet 16, he's going to feel extremely comfortable. Based on what I've seen though, his ceiling might be lower than that. He'll have the talent, IMO, to be a sweet 16 coach, I just don't know if he can motivate players to dig down deeper as the season winds down. Just don't know.
A question I have when I lay the cards out on the table is will the fan base embrace Bzd upon success. My answer is no, they won't. So if he gets to a place where he's having success and he's not enjoying it, then I'm not sure what happens.
For whatever reason, Bzd has made a career of being a constant outsider either due to personal failings, circumstance, bad luck or all of the above. Only Pat Riley seems to have every shown/reciprocated Bzd any loyalty whatsoever, so maybe he lands in Miami if Riley is still there.
But ya'll are a long long way off from running Bzd out of town and that seems to be your goal. You are going to fail at that for the next two years. Bzd will only lose his job if Wellman determines that Bzd's ceiling is lower than the Sweet 16 and he won't know that until 2013-2014 at the earliest. So ya'll should pace yourself. You're gonna need stamina.
