If Bz was to go

I don't think Shaka Smart or Anthony Grant will give Wake a second thought. They would have. But not now. Really hope I'm wrong as I would love have either one of those guys as our head coach.

Shaka Smart would.

We never had a shot at Grant when there was a reason.

Smart will in a couple of years after ACC expansion, assuming he is still available. But you're right, no elite coach would be touch this job if we fired two coaches in four years. It would be Battle, talk Kelsey out of retirement, or some NCAA tourney flash in the pan or retread like a Jeff Jones, but I doubt him since I believe he balled a co-ed before he was fired at UVa.

Gregg Marshall didn't get his Wichita State team above .500 until his 3rd year. He is no savior, and a prick. On the assumption that Wellman is still our AD, keep in mind he hires nice guys. They may be intense or even a little prickly, but god-fearing, family-centered people. If you want to guess on the next hire, I would start from there.

Shaka Smart, Anthony Grant, Chris Mack, Pat Kelsey in that order would be my guess. All family men. A few of them may even actually fear God. You can throw Battle in at #1 if Wellman fires Bzd at the end of this year and move Kelsey up to #2

The chances of us getting someone from the Prosser tree is slim to fucking none. And from that tree- Chris Mack? The guy who let his guys run off at the mouth after the Cincy fight? Pat Kelsey? The guy who isn't even coaching this year? Really?

Bone, you are better than this.

Well, I just don't think it will happen. I know if I'm the AD and I have decided that Bzd was a mistake, I sit on my hands through at least next year and possibly the year after that, which is the likely year Syracuse and Pitt are added. I think the first time Duke or UNC play Syracuse on national TV is way more important than the number of wins in 2013 or 2014. Because the clock may not start ticking until right after that day.

You might be right le bone. Maybe we should give Bz two more years to turn things around. Maybe that's only fair. But what if you're wrong and Bz can't get it done? I feel confident in saying season tickets are gonna take another hit next season. All those empty seats you're currently seeing- it's only going to get worse, probably a lot worse. Still, I don't like to see anyone fired, even someone who makes more than 99% of the country.

I'm certain I thought that when he was hired. Actually, it went more like this:
"Jeff [Redacted] huh? Let me look this guy up. Oh, that's not good. This definitely isn't good. Yikes. No way Wake couldn't get a better coach than this. WTF was Wellman thinking. Fuuuuuuuuuuck!"

He was on no one's radar. I love how a number of folks on the old board were suddenly experts on him, claimed they had been closely following his career for years, and were eager to tell everyone what a great hire he was- and to call anyone who doubted the wisdom of the hire an idiot.
"Awesome! One thing I'm not worried is getting recruits. NBA level talent is gonna want to play for a NBA coach!"
"Check out what Melo said about him!"
"He's an x's and o's genius. Remember that Air Force game?"

If only I could resurrect those posts.

Lack of Search Function FTL!

I think the talent coming in next year will generate more interest next year than this year. So if I am AD, I'm going to hope/wish/pray that greater expectations next year plus a better economy will add bodies to seats. I'm going to go with that. And re-evaluate about this time next year. Because, there will likely be no bump in 2014 just from incoming talent the way there may be next year. If by this time next year, the crowd is still apathetic, then I re-assess then.

And I pray to God this WV thing causes Syracuse and Pitt to roll into the ACC next year for hoops. Because if Syracuse and Pitt aren't in the ACC until 2014 and we are not a bubble team next year, then my hand is forced before I'm really ready to pull the trigger. And I'm gonna throw everything at Anthony Grant for 24 hours and then turn around and do the exact same thing to Shaka Smart. Depending on where Alabama hoops is, I might go straight to Smart so as not to offend him. Tell him you're my guy, I have no backup option. You're the reason I fired Bzd and aren't you tired of coaching a team that gets no exposure until March every year. Wouldn't you like 5 months of exposure?

If you are the CEO of a corporation and decide that a hire you made was a mistake and sat on said mistake for 2 more years... you yourself would then be fired for complete incompetence.

This. Everyone's gut reaction at the beginning was the correct one. "Buzz who? WTF?" There is no way Buzz takes this program anywhere...and I'm afraid that everyone is going to be underwhelmed with the incoming class. They will help, but bubble-team in two years is just not that exciting.

Before Buzz was hired, our program was getting top rated recruits and competing in big games. Yes, there were problems and disappointments, but the answer to those problems was not to hire a loser coach and recruit "five star hearts." Our program had a rattle in the engine and Wellman decided to fix it by running the car off a cliff.

C'mon. I think the hire was universally panned by the board. I think that half of us were trying to see something positive out of the complete, "WTF moment" of finding out that he was out coach. I don't remember a lot of people being super excited about the guy. People were trying to see the logic behind the hire.

I am pretty sure Goodman broke the news on a Friday afternoon. God that sucked. The time between Gaudio being fired and the announcement was like Xmas Eve. So much anticipation. Who could we get? We were recently #1 in the country, we are an ACC basketball school and perceived as the best opening available. We also had a top class coming in. The possibilities were endless.

And then we hear Jeff [Redacted] has been hired. Who is that guy? Hiring him was like showing up to prom with a chick that is completely busted.

Anyway, the point is that I don't remember a "number" of people being excited about him. Remember that Deman's wife had to get on the boards and ask why he had been freaking out at home so much.

haha. You don't know any CEOs, do you? CEOs milk years out of employees they don't particularly like or have faith in all the time! Are you serious?

If you think you will be in a position to hit a home run with a hire by waiting (e.g., poach a CFO who is not quite ready), then you will rub the back of the guy you got for two years and wait - as long as you think he's not doing irreparable damage.

You gotta get out of hillybillyville, man. This is a fairly common business practice.

I was actually pretty excited, but I think I was one of about 2 1/2. Maybe there were a few more, but there weren't many. And I couldn't have given a shit about his time at Air Force.

Which part of Buzz's resume were you particularly excited about?

Nuggets. I've gone over it a bunch so I'm not going to do it again, but the year prior to Melo arriving in Denver, his coaching performance was widely admired by a lot of people in the NBA, which is why he got jobs afterwards.

The next year, the Nuggets made the playoffs and the turnaround in wins from the previous year was like the 2nd greatest turnaround in NBA history, I think after the Spurs after adding Duncan and Robinson coming back from injury.

The year after that, KMart was signed for like $90 million against Bzd'd objection, KMart found out and confronted him may have threatened him and Denver management backed their new max player and he was gone in 10 games. That's it a nutshell.

The part where the Nugs gutted the team and hired him to get the best possible lottery pick in the 2003 draft then got Carmelo, signed Andre Miller, and predictably improved dramatically.

Seriously. Jaybone loves Bz for that.

No. It was for the year he won like 18 games. The 25 win turnaround is cool, but his admirers came from the prior year when Joe Wolff was logging like 30 minutes a game and bzd actually held open tryouts for a roster spot.
