Should We Hang CP3?

If we don't retire #3 we are pretty much conceding that we are never going to retire another player's number. Hang it.

Hang it so that we have something to be proud of at the Joel for the first time in a long time.

Retire- Hemrick, Chappell, Duncan.
Honor- Murdoch, Lefty Davis, Packer, Leonard, Charlie Davis, Skip Brown, Griffin, Frank Johnson, Rogers, Childress, Howard, Paul

Coaches Honored- Greason, McKinney, Odom

Let's not forget...

When all is said and done, Chris Paul will be one of, if not the greatest PG to ever play in the NBA. Five years into his career, he's already on par in most of the categories with where Stockton, Thomas, Johnson were in their careers - and this was playing with 0 help in New Orleans. If he stays with Blake at what has become a highlight reel out in LA, it'll get ridiculous.

So that being said 2 or 3 years ago I was on the fence about this. I would say after the last few seasons and how far we've fallen, hang the fucking thing. All-American, great representative of the University, born and raised just down the street, and will go down as one of the greatest to ever play the game.

Who the hell do you guys think is coming to Wake Forest in the future? I'll pretty much guarantee you, it'll never be someone who will end up as good as CP3.

Agreed. I don't think any of us appreciated how good CP3 really was. At the pace that he's at, he will go down as the best point guard of his generation. He's already left his peers in the dust years ago, i.e. Jarrett Jack, TJ Ford, Raymond Felton, and to a lesser extent Deron Williams. The guy is the best point guard in the league and will be for years to come. I too was on the fence on this one and I must admit, I was still a little bitter about the nut-punch, WVU, pretty much the entire kick in the balls that was the Spring of 2005. CP3 has become a great ambassador for the university and Winston-Salem. He has done more for the school in 5 years than Duncan has in 15 years.

Howard was a first all-american

How do you know what Duncan has done?

Wake has a HOF as well for great representatives of the University.

Great personal accomplishments, minimal team accomplishments. 0-1 in the ACCT, did play in a 2nd because he was suspended.

Over powered by Jemeer Nelson of St. Joe's.

Taron Downey almost pulled out the WV game for us.

Illinois?

kaye took him completely out of his game in Cameron

I think it would be more correct to say we didn't know how good CP3 would become.

Has all this positive press gotten us better recruits?

You explained why you don't believe Paul's number should be retired despite meeting your AA criteria. Share with us your reasoning behind only "honoring" Howard.

If a player made first team All American on two polls and second team on one is good enough for me. Something like that. Rule of thumb.

Yes he meets the minimum requirements.

Keeper is trolling so hard on this thread, has me rolling. That said, his original point is valid. Can't be retiring a bunch of numbers. I am not in favor of some completely arbitrary standard, but we have to be very judicious since numbers in basketball are limited. At any one time we might have as many as 15 players (if not more) that need numbers. There are 36 total numbers possible in basketball. That leaves 21 available for retirement, but 10 have already been retired. We have 11 left.

Use Arnie as much as we can before he dies. Use Chris Paul while he's the hottest PG in the NBA. The best rule of marketing...grab what is unique to you and hold it tight because all the money in the world from our competitors can't buy it.

I know you were waiting for someone to notice that your suggestion for coaches honored resulted in taking down Skip's banner, but apparently no one did.

I would argue its alot more common for a basketball player to not stay four years than for a golfer to not stay four years, so arnie deserves less from Wake than CP3 does, yet we made Arnie an honorary trustee. So I therefore conclude its proper to retire his number eventhough he was only here for 2 years.

We already have too many numbers retired. We made a mistake years ago by not establishing the retire/honor, two-level system. It is too late to fix it for the ones already retired. But we must avoid compounding the error by retiring more numbers too easily.

In the case of CP, I would not retire his number. Jersey retirement is for accomplishments while at Wake ONLY. All of his NBA accomplishments and all the things he has done for the school since graduating have nothing to do with this decision. CP was a great player at Wake and may very well end up as the greatest point guard to ever play here. But, he was only here 2 years and had few concrete accomplishments, beyond his individual awards.

Personally I would be in favor of a rule requiring that a player play at Wake at least 3 years to have his number retired. Future great players who play 1 or 2 years before going pro could have their jerseys honored, in rare instances...
