Dear Shaka...

Would you people quit saying the Big Donors paid to get Dino gone and will pay to buy a new coach. I am considered a big donor and have never been solicited to pay into any Dino buyout fund nor have any of my friends. That is not the way that Wake works. You actually are hurting your chances of getting a high priced coach by cutting your ticket purchases and donations because it puts a further crimp in the AD budget which hurts in your ability to pay salaries. With the thought of purchasing the Joel we are at an even more difficult financial endeavor which ultimately will have deeper consequences than whether we can pay 2.5 million for a basketball coach. And yes, Dino is still being paid Approximately 400000.00 this year and next year unless he takes another job.

Did Wellman not say in his press conference that a few large donors were paying the buyout? I remember him saying that for sure. Regardless, it's beside the point since we should be seeing a significant uptick in revenue with the new TV deal. As I have said many times, this should be able to fund a 3rd contract if need be.

I don't think that's true. I think it was bzd own penalty fee at Colorado he was talking about being bzd's responsibility. I believe the bulk of Dino's money comes off the books next year. It's possible the financials changed a bit when the Teague Gary blowjob story went national as I think we negotiated a smaller buyout number in exchange for good reputation. But that could have been claused. Don't know.

I don't think we can pay Shaka today for revenue we anticipate tomorrow though. Wellman has run a buttoned down department up til now. Can't see that changing. He didn't even start the scoreboard til he had money in hand even though that meant having it under construction during the season correct?

I am not really sure when the new TV contract starts. I was under the impression that it started this year, but maybe not.

Not Exactly. There has been one upset in the tournament so far. Shaka was the coach of it. At no point did I discuss his resume or this being the only impressive win on it.

There was no sarcastic intent.

Just kidding around. We all know he has a good resume.

In response to the tags, I'd love to have Stevens, Marshall, or Lutz as well.

... If you had to guess if VCU or Wake will be better in 3 years without knowing the coach for either, can you honestly say Wake?

Yes I can. No doubt in my mind. And no, I am not saying that because I have faith in Buzz. Things tend to return to their mean. Wake is in the ACC and is historically a much better program than VCU. We will rise, they will fall (probably because Shaka leaves).

It will never happen but Wellman needs to man up, admit the mistake and do whatever it takes to hire Shaka. He is the real deal and could be here for decades

I agree it'll never happen, at least as long as Wellman is our AD. If Wellman is being honest about the recruiting limitations he's putting on a coach, no one of Smart's stature is gonna want any part of that. I also believe Wellman damaged his brand with the way he fired Dino and then botching the hire of Bzdick, which will also make it tough for him to sign a bigger name mid-major guy. While I'm hoping Shaka doesn't go to Illinois, I just don't see him coming to Wake to work for Wellman. I still say the best chance to get Shaka at Wake is a package deal with Norwood.

No big name coach is going to come to Wake if they are not allowed to recruit future NBA players. We won't be in the top half of the league anytime soon if that is our new model.

Coach Smart is already getting Bzzz money out of VCU, and last night's win just added more $ to that. Next years VCU team is loaded compared to this years team. I'm not totally sold on Shaka to Illinois, but that might be me seeing life through my Black and Gold VCU glasses. It was great seeing 2 former VCU coaches yesterday in Greensboro. Jeff Capel who led VCU from the depths of despair, and Anthony Grant who set Shaka up nicely. Coach Smart just took the Rams to the next level.

Jaybone,
You are correct about the need for Wellman to run a program under some financial control. Also, as styated above for TBR again, there was no big donor buyout fund to pay Dino off.

Turn down Illinois, stay at VCU.....next year, everyone on this board will help you move into your new home in W-S. Deal?

As long as wake is in the acc and on tobacco road it is an enticing landing for a coach. Shaka values education. Didn't he go to oberlin? His half brother is a professor at Stanford.

He went to Kenyon College. My sister went there. It is very small, pretty campus above a small town in central Ohio, and has very rigorous academics. I would compare it to Davidson more than any other school. There are a couple articles out there about how he chose Kenyon over Brown and some other Ivy League schools and what that says about his character. I would think a school like Wake would appeal to him more than any other ACC school. However, VCU is nothing like Wake or Kenyon so who knows what type of program he wants to run as a coach.

But again, our job is not open to begin with so it makes no difference.

Jaybone,

I must be remembering wrong. I don't care enough to watch the press conference again, and I can't find anything about it in any of the articles about the Dino firing.

Why do people keep saying with certainty we don't have the money to pay a competitive salary? Wellman is the highest paid AD in the conference and Grobe is the second highest paid football coach in the conference. We also have an influx of new revenue coming in via expansion and the new TV contract. If we can already manage the contracts of both [Redacted] and Guadio then we should be able to also manage a third, much larger contract by using that new revenue.

Becauase on the TOOS, some of the insiders say that we approached coach x and y, and couldn't afford the cost and so moved to bzz. Whether that is spin or not, who knows.. On the one hand, it means we're broke when it comes to our major sport. On the other hand it means Bzz was really close to the top of the list.

K's reported salary is 4.1 million a year. Bzz's is estimated at 1 million a year.

You're insane if you think that Shaka would get anywhere close to K's salary, much less the combined salary of K and Bzz. He will land somewhere making in the 2.5 range.

Pretty sure his actual salary is around $2.5 million, other contracts (Nike, Sirius, etc.) probably bring it up to 4.1.

Smart is the Andrew Luck of CBB coaches right now. Plenty of teams would pay more for Andrew Luck than Manning or Brady right now. Which is why Smart will probably make more than a lot of HOF coaches. He will command a ton because there are plenty of schools competing for him.

Question is should we not be competing for the Shakas out there? And if we can't, whose fault is that. Who tied up all this money with Dino and Buzzfuck? The extent to which Wellman fucked our bball program is unbelievable.

The biggest reason Smart will not be our coach is that Wellman won't offer.

No big name coach is going to come to Wake if they are not allowed to recruit future NBA players. We won't be in the top half of the league anytime soon if that is our new model.

One more time, we DO NOT have the restrictions you are projecting. If WE DID, we'd have been ALL OVER LEWIS instead of CMM. The restrictions are minimal - we are not trying to beat Kentucky for potential one and doners, kids that come into college with zero interest in getting a degree. So, JEFF TEAGUE YES MARQUIS TEAGUE NO.

BZD is ENCOURAGED to go get highly ranked kids with potential NBA futurers. He is NOT ENCOURAGED to spend recruiting dollers going after guys who are projected into the lottery of drafts following the frosh year before they set foot on a college campus. So, there are three or four kids, maybe 7 we are "RESTRICTED" from going after. We ARE NOT HOOSIERS and bobknightfan WILL NEVER be appeased.

Wrap your mind around reading and absorbing rather than projecting into some fucked up stratosphere of nonreality.
