Disco Dan Article: Despite setbacks, [Redacted] remains optimistic

[Redacted]'s expectations for next year give me at least a modicum of optimism that those are the expectations that he has been told he has to meet to keep his job after next year. I have a really hard time believing that [Redacted] would have set those expectations for himself (although he already started setting up the youth excuse and the tougher schedule excuse)

My hope as well.

"We weren't the worst team in the ACC."

WHAT A COUP! HUZZAH!

I thought Dan did a good job with some of the questions - especially pushing him on the lack of fans and the transfers. Bzzz's answer that he's connecting with the fan base by going to church and having season tickets at the Dash shows that he doesn't have any clue on how to connect with the alumni. And I loved how he declined to talk about his changes to the game plan for next year, because I'm sure all of the other ACC coaches are waiting on the edge of the seat to get some nuggets from our boy.

Dan really asked some pointed questions as recounted in his blog. The stock answer is" we have built the foundation without compromising our values." I have no idea what that means.

You don't have to know what it means. The big time, old DC members eat that nonsense up. We must believe that Wake Forest is on some mythical pedestal ethics wise!

Since [Redacted]'s first practice as Wake Forest's coach:
A player got a DUI
A player got arrested for theft
A player was connected with said theft and stayed on the team; only to be kicked off later for smoking weed
A player gave up on the team halfway thru the first year
3 other players transferred.

Culture.

MTOW: One comment I’ve heard is that a lot of people haven’t gotten to know you at Wake Forest. Do you feel a need to make a stronger connection to the fan base?

JB: I’m out there. I’m in the community. I speak as often as I can. I’m out there walking and exercising in classes every day. I meet a lot of people, in church, at (Winston-Salem) Dash games, where I’ve had season tickets last year. I meet a lot of people. I have a lot of friends. A lot of people know me. Perhaps those who say that they don’t know me are the ones that. . . There are a lot of people that do know me. In my own way, it’s got to happen naturally. And I’m doing everything that I can to make sure that people do know me. My wife is involved in many, many activities. So we have a very close circle of friends and are constantly looking to make new friends.

Yes, the culture change has been used as post hoc rationalization.

I'm 99% sure I could get this guy to throw the first punch if I ever met him. Would assault be grounds for dismissal?

This is an uncomfortable sequence.

MTOW: How alarming was it to see Joel Coliseum half empty last year, and to see the games against Duke and Carolina with the place half full of blue.

JB: We’re moving forward. It’s interesting. Attendance at college basketball as a whole is down. Our attendance, if you look, we were (sixth) in the ACC last year in attendance. Not bad. It will be better. But overall the state of college basketball, for whatever reason – and people have debated about the reasons – at all the schools attendance has been down. We’re moving forward.

MTOW: What the people I’m talking to compare it to is not what is going on at Florida State or Miami or Boston College, but to what they used to see at Joel Coliseum when they would come to games. Is there a point of no return as to getting fans back to Joel Coliseum?

JB: Fans will be back.

MTOW: What makes you say that?

JB: Because with this team, the foundation, like I said, has been laid and is now in place. It’s been established, without compromising our values. And as they meet our players and watch them – the players now in our program coupled with the class coming in – they’ll enjoy these young men. They’ll enjoy cheering these young men on.

MTOW: Winning is a big component of that obviously.

JB: We’re moving forward.

Talked to a friend in the AD yesterday and he says that there is pressure on Buzz to win this season, which is why we went with such a large class before the three transfers. Apparently it was also stated that 'just because you have a 5 year contract, that does not mean you have 5 years' (not a literal quote). Don't know what that's worth but I'm hoping that this is a 'put up or shut up' season.

For as much flak as Dan takes around here for sucking up and not asking tough questions, I thought he did a very good job of that in the full interview. Kudos.

[Redacted] has clearly been given lines to say in public.

JB: Our foundation has been established, without compromising our values. We are in a great place right now. I’m excited. We have a group of young men who bleed black and gold. They’re committed. The (Academic Progress Rate) is strong. I’m excited.

MTOW: But how do you explain the attrition?

JB: I’m going forward, Dan.
JB: Our recruiting has been great. We’ve had an excellent recruiting year. I believe in these young men. These young men believe in me. These young men believe in Wake Forest. They bleed black and gold. And that’s a powerful combination.
JB: I’m going to stick by my answer, that we wish them well and this is our team and I’m really excited about the young men that we have on our team. They bleed black and gold. You want players who want to be here.

JB: I know this: The players that are coming back have grown. The players we have coming in are talented and committed, and will provide depth. And we haven’t compromised our values by doing all this. The foundation has been established. As I said last spring we made really good strides from Year One to Year Two and we continue to make really good strides from Year Two to Year Three. So we will continue to go up the ladder, and that’s a great thing.

Like a politician on a Sunday news program. Just keep spouting the same nonsense party line no matter what the question is. Pathetic and annoying.

Last year at this time, he was saying that D.Green was 6.11.now he has gained 10 pounds. Daniel is a long term project at best. When is Bz going to face reality that the latest transfers destroyed his better values argument and that we have no inside game. That means we are not a threat to make the Ncaas anytime soon.

The foundation has been established...but the plans never called for a basement until Bzz arrived. Unfotunately, there still seems to be time and enough excuses to add another sub-terranean story to the house that Bzz built

So he's not even willing to say that winning will make the fans come back? Is he hoping the fans will come back because we have nice guys on the team?

Does everyone remember how much weight and strength Carson gained last Spring and Summer? This of course happened when no actual basketball was taking place and we didn't see the players on a weekly basis.

I also want to second the kudos for Dan. Very good interview and good job trying to force the issue to get answers while not being inflammatory.
