Maryland Takes Ball and Goes Home...

The administrators pushing this have no comprehension of the passions involved with the Duke/Carolina games. That all goes away. They have no idea of the shitstorm that's going to come down on them if they do this. A lot of MD bball fans have to furious.

We used to play Duke/UNC home-and-home every year. With the addition of Pitt/Syracuse, we only play them once a year (and thus, at home once every other year). The tradition argument is so dumb because the ACC tradition was ruined when we brought in Pitt/Syracuse. Additionally, we actually like the idea of weening our fanbase off the annual idea that only the Duke game matters because that is currently the culture of our fanbase. That's awesome if you are a mid-major school with no chance (Ie: Marshall/WVU, Ohio/Ohio State, Duquesne/Pitt), but I'd like to think we'd like to achieve more.

Yep. A basketball crazy school is going to give up all of the basketball tradition of playing long time rivals. The only natural rival in the B10 is Penn State, and they suck at hoops. Enjoy that Wednesday night game against Minnesota.

And, with the move, Rutgers. We may not be "natural" rivals, but we surely already have a nice little hatred with MSU too. There is no love lost on their side either.

Edit: We've never been viewed as the "main" rival by any school in the ACC. Duke has UNC, UVA has VTech. Now, Pitt would have been nice (especially from me being from Pittsburgh and already despising Pitt, so I actually hate this for selfish reasons), but PSU would actually be a natural rival that would embrace us as their rival too (as they always have the same complaint of never being any schools "main" rival). If they decide not to, then we will invade College Park-North every year when we play Rutgers.

fuck Maryland, their ugly uniforms, shitty teams, and their asshole fans. They're the worst.

I remember when Ish sent them packing (in OT?) at the joel a few years back. Their fans had a meltdown that makes this place seem like a debutante ball. Leave, GTFO, you won't be missed.

we already lost those rivalries with the new ACC expansion/divisions. Not playing both UNC and Duke at home once every three years I think?

Yeah, that sucks. But you will be playing them every year, even if it's not always a home/home.

The football game against Rutgers in 2007 was fun, that could be a nice little rivalry.

I'm still certain this will fall apart somehow. And then all the rest of the ACC will hate us even more. And I'm fine with that, current ACC >>>>>>>>> ACC from just a year ago.

That's simply not true at all. The Big Ten Network can charge more per subscriber when they have a school that is actually in the market. From what I read (I think it was on Audibles), the Big Ten Network currently can charge $0.10 per subscriber in Baltimore and DC. If they add Maryland, they can charge $1.00 per subscriber.

Do you think the cable companies will just accept a higher charge per subscriber without passing that cost to the consumer? This usually means the network remains relegated to a tier where an additional cost can be charged to receive the channel since basic tier pricing is essentially fixed. Look at what happened to NFL Network for years on Comcast, TWC, etc. That substantially limits your revenue growth potential when subscribers have to pay a premium to watch the games they don't care about anyway. It's not as simple as hitting a switch and everybody makes more money.

I think it's going to fall apart too. And the administrators who've been secretly pushing this are going to be run out of town. I bet they've pissed off a lot of people, including some big boosters.

With MD and Rutgers football added (what a draw!) the Big Ten will be able to do what the NFL (the national pastime) struggled to do. The money will be pouring in!

lol @ linking to our free board.

lol @ defending Greensboro. Literally half the problem with this conference.

You don't think I'd pay to read a MD do you? And the negative obsession with Greensboro is just silly.

If the ACC has a problem, 99.99% of it is that our football teams aren't very good or big TV draws. The other .01% of it is a combination of a lot of other factors.

His point was more that the free board is where the idiots and terrible fans hang out. Its a cesspool.

And Greensboro is terrible.

I love Md fans and their irrational obsession with Greensboro.

would you go to an ACC tournament in Tallahassee?
Winston-Salem --> Tallahassee = 10 hour drive
College Park --> Greensboro = 5 hr, 45 mins

Yeah, little different. And I did the drive from DC to Winston every home football game last year. Not a bad drive if you time it right.

would you go to an ACC tournament in Tallahassee?

Well, Greensboro is bigger than Tallahassee, the Greensboro metropolitan area is much bigger than Tallahassee. Greensboro has a facility that is capable of hosting the tournament and has a long tradition of hosting the tournament and drawing crowds to the tournament.

But other than that exactly comparable.

The funny thing is that if there were ever a time for the ACC to adopt D.C. as the site for the tournament, it'd be about now. Cool timing, Maryland.
