Official Bonnie Tyler Total Eclipse thread

Indiana is looking good. I’m on the road now to meet several friends from law school back in the last century.

Official Bonnie Tyler Total Eclipse thread

A full eclipse with a clear view will be one of the most breathtaking events you will ever witness in your lifetime. After seeing totality in 2017, I’m planning to drive 8.5 hours for this one if there is a fair chance the sky will be clear enough.

    Transgender Athletes

Team captain and 2022 Southeastern Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year, among other accomplishments. If men on a chat board can have opinions on fairness in women’s sport, seems she is entitled to one, too, especially since it directly affected her. How much...

Official Bonnie Tyler Total Eclipse thread

I'm going to Indiana if the weather will be clear. Approximately 8 hours. The last total solar eclipse was spectacular and will always be one of my most memorable lifetime events. Everybody should experience at least one in their lifetime. The road time will be worth it.

navigating the dry waters of NA beers and liquors (for recs, reviews, whatever)

They had a black IPA at one time that was excellent. By far my favorite of any of their beers. I have not checked their lineup recently to see if it is available again.

navigating the dry waters of NA beers and liquors (for recs, reviews, whatever)

I switched to NAs about two years ago. The Athletic line is mostly very good. Sam Adams' hazy IPA is good. Untitled Art is good. NA liquors don't do it for me and the NA wines seem bad enough I haven't bothered. Some restaurants are starting to have some genuinely good NA cocktails...

    FedEx delivery issues

FedEx delivered a package we had ordered (worth more than $2k) to a similar street address in a wrong city and state. We knew exactly where it was delivered and the package was ultimately recovered but some parts were missing. The retail dealer replaced the entire package for us and, I...

I’m planning to use my new wireless TempSpike on today’s turkey. Seems to get good reviews for internal accuracy.

    Boone/App Recs

Mint was very good the other week. Will definitely go back again although I don’t know if young people will be that excited about it. We like The Local as our default place. Very good by Boone standards for family fare. The Cardinal is good for burgers.

    Best Part of North Carolina

Depends on what you mean by culture. Asheville would probably be your only option for a variety of fine dining and cultural offerings. However, there are several areas and pockets with good people that make great neighbors.

A college degree is a lousy investment

Great to see these changes, starting with federal loans for degrees and programs that will leave students in unaffordable debt...

Have you ever fired a gun?

I have hunted my entire life, have a great bird dog, and own several firearms, including some very nice shotguns that are probably embarrassed to seen with me. I mostly hunt quail, woodcock and deer. However, I don’t hunt as much as I used to growing up.

    Rate Yourself As a Singer

I'm a 1 on my best day. Musically, I am barely qualified to play the shaker, or whatever that shake thing is called. Mercury is excellent; I have seen him perform live in WNC.

    Restaurants in Boone, NC

As others have mentioned, Over Yonder, Gamekeeper and Reid’s for you top three options. We had a great Sunday lunch at Over Yonder a few weeks ago.

    Pit Fishing Thread

Your wife might enjoy a western fly fishing trip, maybe near Yellowstone area. (Let me know if you want a good contact for that area.) A weekend in Bozeman could be good or something like a nice lodge on the Madison (not sure how that is fishing after a kill off awhile back). Montana is...

    Pit Fishing Thread

Where is your starting point, how far do you want to go and would you get a guide? Steelhead might be showing up in NY by then, south of Buffalo. That’s a favorite trip for me but get a guide. (I can suggest one if interested) You might also enjoy a float trip on the S Holston in E TN with a...

A college degree is a lousy investment

”A majority of Americans don’t think a college degree is worth the cost, according to a new Wall Street Journal-NORC poll, a new low in confidence in what has long been a hallmark of the American dream. The survey, conducted with NORC at the University of Chicago, a nonpartisan research...

A college degree is a lousy investment

Rough calculation, but if tuition, room and board was $10k in 1986 (I think it was something like that), then adjusted for inflation the cost would be $26,702 in 2022.
