'17 Specials & '18 Midterms Thread

The Nazis were an ethno-nationalist fascist group that banned worker strikes. They were nominally socialist to gain a populist foothold with workers but once they did so, ignored the concerns of the workers in lieu of increased productivity at any costs.

The whole "socialism is bad because (Venezuela, Cuba, Nazis)" shtick is not only intellectually lazy it's dishonest. Roughly on par with "you know Lincoln was a Republican and Democrats were in favor of slavery" as far as political arguments go.

So they used populism to come to power and once in power stripped workers’ rights. Hmm.

Evil. Way to show #personalresponsibility. They knew that the cuts would not pay for themselves. It's another excuse to cut social programs and accelerate wealth transfer to the top.

Moronic RWers think because Nazis called themselves national socialists that they were socialists. The same idiots don't say the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is a free and democratic country because it's in their name.

But Trump believes it...

Well...as i'm sure you are aware, referring to ethnonationalist grievance as simply "populism" is a great disservice to the term. Germany was humiliated and broken by the treaty of Versailles, but Hitler needed intense anti-jewish ethno-nationalism to replicate the Kaiser Wilhelm'sNamibian genocide in Europe. The Nazi party weren't exactly displaced farmers and chimney sweeps.

well...that is every Repugnicant's talking points.

If the US has someone whom historians will look back on as the gravedigger of American democracy, it is Mitch McConnell. He stoked the hyperpolarization of American politics to make the Obama presidency as dysfunctional and paralyzed as he possibly could.

Yep. That whole section on McConnell et al is spot on.

Good lesson for our DSA friends in that article (which is solid and scary):

"But the potential impact of the Mueller report does suggest yet another eerie similarity to the interwar period—how the toxic divisions in domestic politics led to the complete inversion of previous political orientations. Both Mussolini and Hitler came to power in no small part because the fascist-conservative alliances on the right faced division and disarray on the left. The Catholic parties (Popolari in Italy, Zentrum in Germany), liberal moderates, Social Democrats, and Communists did not cooperate effectively in defense of democracy. In Germany this reached the absurd extreme of the Communists underestimating the Nazis as a transitory challenge while focusing on the Social Democrats—dubbed “red fascists”—as the true long-term threat to Communist triumph."
