2018 College Basketball Coaching Carousel

Another coaching guy to keep an eye on is Nathan Davis at Bucknell. He has them at the top of their league every year. One negative is that he has never coached (head or assistant) at any P6 school. Colgate, Navy and Bucknell are his only stops. That might not translate well into a P6 recruiting eye.

Agree on the recruiting issue. On the other points, he's still way ahead of Penny Hardaway.

Tubby Smith to High Point being finalized

He’s a High Point alum.

Wake better stop scheduling area Big South schools. Not a good look to have the third best coach in the triad.

At Tubby’s age, I don’t think their were many suitors for him as a head coach.

High Point makes sense given he’s an alum. Good opportunity to just continue coaching without having as much pressure to deal with.

One Wake guy hiring another. Good work. May they have success (except if playing Wake).

Danny came from pedigree that said he should be able to coach some defense. He was extremely reluctant to change from defenses that require really good individual defensive capabilities to be effective. That is probably part of his learning curve.

The learning curve argument was valid 3-4 years ago when he had barely any experience as a head coach....but it's just a flat line now.

I will be watching Hamilton (& Lepore) to see how they progress... Potential Wake coaches after Wellman screws up the next hire?

Danny had a pretty long track record of seeing successful man-to-man defense. NBA, Kansas, Tulsa. It takes some time to figure out that it isn't working, and it isn't going to work well at Wake, and then to figure out and implement another defense or defenses and get them to work. 2018-2019 season will be the first season where there will be guys who at least should be able to play man-to-man defense against P6 teams. We will see how it works, and whether the potential on paper translates into results on the court.

What K did at Duke, revamping the D from man-to-man to zone in mid season is pretty remarkable in how well it worked. Most coaches have a preferred defense they use most of the time and reserve other types for specific situations.

I'll put this here, figure it doesn't really deserve a new thread.

Louisville made their interim AD permanent. Vince Tyra got a five year contract at $850,000+bonuses per year. His first big job will be to hire a new BB coach for Louisville. He used to be a baseball player at Louisville arch-rival Kentucky.

Mark Prosser (Skip's son) rumored to be announced as Western Carolina's new head coach tomorrow.

So, there’s a chance that none of Odom, Kelsey or Miller will move up a rung on the coaching ladder?
