2020 Democratic Presidential Nominees

Let's talk policy.

My thoughts on some of Beto's positions that are highlighted in the 538 article I posted.

abolition of for profit/private prisons - I strongly support

ban on assault weapons- This is my most left position. I wouldn't be sad about a ban on all guns.

elimination of bail sentences - I need to be more educated. Certainly a more fair way to get people to show up for their court date is needed.

border wall- I'm very pro immigration

impeachment of Trump - waste of time. Like has been stated here. It could do more harm than good.

allow people to enroll in single payer- I support single payer. I'm not sure what he means by "allowing" people to enroll. I need to educate myself on that.

$15 minimum wage- support

Marijuana - absolutely

opposing death penalty - I support. I'm not so much against it morally, but I don't trust the process to decide who actually deserves it.

I feel like Beto's main difference is not endorsing a single payer system and instead working a dual medicaid/private system to incrementally move people towards a one payer system. My issue with him is that these dont all appear to be long standing beliefs and he ran as something of a moderate/conservative financially before who was about cutting spending. I think there's plenty of spending we can cut, but I dont think most politicians will cut the largess I see and will cut useful social programs.

It’s pretty telling that the far left has put walls around Sanders and Warren while attacking every other candidate. Most of the centrist Dems I know are fine with whoever emerges from the primary but the far left wants blood.

From what I can see no one in the media is talking about Warren anymore, which I guess makes sense as she's been in the race for 20 years it seems. Bernie supporters get defensive, which I get as they're constantly denigrated with childish names like Bernie Bros. Meanwhile the majority of Democrat candidates are parroting the ideas those two have had for years but aren't receiving any of the calls of socialist! that Sanders and Warren attract. And the average voter cant articulate the difference between any of them apart from their age, race and personality. Good times, but can we just start the debates now?

no policy yet, but some beta poetry appropriate for today's democratic party

“I need a butt-shine,” the poem begins … and it really all just goes downhill from there:

I need a butt-shine,
Right now
You are holy,
Oh, sacred Cow
I thirst for you,
Provide Milk.

Buff my balls,
Love the Cow,
Good fortune for those that do.
Love me, breathe my feet,
The Cow has risen.

Wax my ass,
Scrub my balls.
The Cow has risen,
Provide Milk.

Yeah, he was 16 years old when he wrote that.

I think it's pretty freaking cool that Beto was in a punk rock band when he was younger. That's something more artistic or creative than anything I've ever done. Frankly, most of us wouldn't have the courage to do it. So good for him.

I also don't hate his positions, although they could be slightly more progressive. So I'm cool with Beto for now. I also want to #GetMoreButt.

I guess what I'm saying that I'm open to almost every Democratic candidate right now except for Biden, and I'm a former Bernie Bro.

yeah but did you see that picture of him eating ice cream

well, we know one thing at least. if Beto makes it through to the general, we know his opponent will be incapable of jumping up on a table.

Liking Beto much more now that we know about his punk rocking, murder fiction writing, computer hacking, bow hunting teenage years

Sounds like a normal 16 year old. I’m now more inclined to support Beto. Thanks for sharing.

i don't like beto but I'm warming up to his teenage poetry

Meanwhile Pete Buttigieg wrote this award winning essay when he was teenager.

Cynical candidates have developed an ability to outgrow their convictions in order to win power. Cynical citizens have given up on the election process, going to the polls at one of the lowest rates in the democratic world. Such an atmosphere inevitably distances our society from its leadership and is thus a fundamental threat to the principles of democracy. It also calls into question what motivates a run for office – in many cases, apparently, only the desire to occupy it. Fortunately for the political process, there remain a number of committed individuals who are steadfast enough in their beliefs to run for office to benefit their fellow Americans. Such people are willing to eschew political and personal comfort and convenience because they believe they can make a difference. One outstanding and inspiring example of such integrity is the country’s only Independent Congressman, Vermont’s Bernie Sanders.

Sanders’ courage is evident in the first word he uses to describe himself: “Socialist”. In a country where Communism is still the dirtiest of ideological dirty words, in a climate where even liberalism is considered radical, and Socialism is immediately and perhaps willfully confused with Communism, a politician dares to call himself a socialist? He does indeed. Here is someone who has “looked into his own soul” and expressed an ideology, the endorsement of which, in today’s political atmosphere, is analogous to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Even though he has lived through a time in which an admitted socialist could not act in a film, let alone hold a Congressional seat, Sanders is not afraid to be candid about his political persuasion.
