2020 Democratic Presidential Nominees

Shoo, you consume media in a way that makes you susceptible to narratives that are being pushed by bots and random twitter rubes. It makes sense why you're so obsessed with Bernie Bros and the threat of Bernie Bros and so resistant to talking about anything that isn't a controversial political tabloid talking point.

ITC - hashtags trend for a lot of reasons. In this case, there seems to me to be a lot more noise regarding people complaining about the hashtag or wondering why nobody they follow is using this trending hashtag, then there are posts (mostly by bot-like accounts with only a handful of non-RT'd posts) that are a bit too on the nose with their use of the hashtag that just magically materialized out of thin air during a debate that not many people watched. There are thousands of posts in the Russian interference thread (that both you and Shoo post on) that show how easy it is to manipulate hashtags for political gain.

You only know what I don't consume. Not sure where you get off acting like you know anything about me personally. I don't know or care what you consume. I understand the impact of social media on politics/elections. You seem to want to downplay it (like you're downplying the accounts who, for purposes you seem to understand and who are likely a mix of hardcore bros and bots, are starting it to sow division and it works). My first post in this conversation is about how the Bros on social media were going crazy, distracting from smoking gun Trump shit -- that seems to have happened, at least on Twitter, and you don't seem to want to acknowledge that.

I'm not on twitter responding to these Bros or posting my own #neverBernie hashtags. I'm going on to see who is doing manipulative shit that will have an impact. What I see is a lot of bros (or bots posing as bros manipulating bros). Sorry that seems to bother you.

But you don't seem to care who is actually doing it. You see a heavily curated selection of accounts that are pushing a very suspect message and uncritically using that evidence to suggest that Bernie Bros - which you also stupidly call Townie and I despite the fact that we're obviously not Bernie Bros - are colluding with each other to undermine Democracy.

Do you understand how batshit insane that sounds?

I didn't call Townie and you that. I didn't address you on this and I jokingly asked Townie if he could talk to the Bros about this. There are thousands of bros out there pushing this -- not sure why you want to deny that.

You have never referred either of us as Bernie Bros on this board? Cmon man.

Maybe there are thousands, but the electorate is 200+ million.

Do you see why I don’t care about tabloid political content like “Bernie Bros?”

Yeah, I've probably referred to you and MHB as a Bro in the past when you were acting like it. I don't think Townie. I think you are completely wrong in dismissing the influence of social media -- you might not care about it, but it is incredibly impactful and because of our stupid electoral system, the selection is probably going to come down to 75k votes deciding the outcome again. Dismiss at your country's peril.

LOL Shoo, you're such a rube. Those are literally random accounts. You have no idea who they are, if they're real, or if they're bots. You don't know their post counts or whether they're even public figures. The algorithim is working exactly as it was intended to, to spark Shoo's outrage and get those clicks!

birdman - who are your favorite general interest science follows? I follow a few climate people that I really like (but whose posts are far too technical for me like 75% of the time), but probably should follow more science tweeters.

Mostly the stuff that I've enjoyed is a community of younger scientists that tweet about science and the pressures of academic life and they've built a lot of camaraderie on Twitter. They are people that I know or have met or they are friends of friends or student's of my friends so it's like a semi-professional social network but it doesn't have the cute pictures of your kids component that Facebook carries. I don't think that would carry interest for a lot of people out side of the wildlife ecology / ecological statistics / conservation realm so, here are a few more general accounts about science and conservation that I enjoy:

Hugh Possingham is the Chief Scientist for the Nature Conservancy:

Katie Mack is an assistant professor of physics and NC State:

Roger Pilke Jr. is a science and policy guy:

Katherine Hayhoe, climate scientist:

You can also follow journals and societies directly

Sigh. Don’t repeat dumb shit solely for the purpose of virtue signaling.

it's almost like we shouldn't solely base our communication practices on digital platforms designed to extract attention in the interest of accumulating Capital

Yep.

I have to spread rep, but thanks for these!

tilt, you too!

Shoo, when you're a hammer, everything looks like a nail (or however the saying goes). When you consider social media to be an important component of reality, then I guess Twitter hashtags and Bernie Bros are threats to the republic. I tend to think social media - OGBoards included - doesn't really look much like the world at-large unless you're a geriatric rube or 16 years old. That's why I tend to focus my time and outrage on the issues that voters, particularly working class voters, care about and are affected by instead of issues that Twitter, Facebook, and the mainstream media are creating for profit and for consumption (because, again, this is politics-as-sport; it's not actually politics).

Congratulations, Strick. #anecdote. I look forward to voting for you.

Personally, social media (outside of the boards), is not really a major component of my reality, but, again, I will not downplay its role in society/politics because it is for millions and millions of people and that would be dumb!

Are any of them on the board of the museum that show people riding dinosaurs?

I watched about 20 minutes of cable news this morning (Morning Joe) and about 30 minutes tonight (MSNBC).

I might watch that guy on Maddow later. Depends if I’m too into Jedi: Fallen Order.

Wanted to update because I know Strick cares.
