2020 Democratic Presidential Nominees

Calling your top opponents corrupt and a liar is VERY, VERY Trumpian. Those are words you don't use if you are trying to keep a party together.

We saw what happened when he lost time. He waited way too long and was half-assed in supporting Hillary. Doing what he's done this week sure looks like the same will happen if he loses the nod.
Trump dreams more about Bernie is the nominee than he does about banging porn stars.
I fucking hate Bernie Sanders but one of him or Warren is lying and Warren has serious proven credibility issues where Bernie does not.

Warren probably is lying, and Bernie is still an asshole.

One would think that RJ would realize what "Trumpian" might entail, but, then again, having no self-awareness is very Trumpian.

It seems weird to “hate” Bernie Sanders. Seems like an authentically good dude. I could see not liking some of his ideas, but hating him seems odd.

especially if you consider yourself a progressive in any area of policy

A perfect example of having a black and white outlook on policy is Social Security. It can be saved and even pay needy beneficiaries more. But both sides have to understand they each have to give something.

There are three ways to solidify it for at least a century:

1. Due to people living much longer, the age must go up. Dems hate this. Raise it one month per years for the next 50-60 years. There can be exceptions for workers whose jobs are physical.
2. Means testing. GOP hates this. - Set an amount of total income for a person/family. Millions of people, who are at the max will stop getting the money. This will help millions of lower income people.
3. End the max of taxing of income. No matter how much you make you pay into it. GOP hates this.

As to, "why should I pay into something I won't get?"- Millions of homeowners pay local real estate taxes for schools who either have no kids or whose kids aren't school any longer. There are other such taxes. The concept is totally silly in a society.

I would be hit pretty hard by all three of those changes (aka youngish person with a highish income), but I would be fine with it. Just recognize that’s a pretty massive tax increase (effectively a 6% increase in effective rate for those with high enough incomes to now get zero benefit).

Social Security isn't nearly in as bad of a shape that you would need to do all that. If you eliminated the cap and paid out SS on those extra wages, it would fix 75% of the shortfall. You don't need to eliminate the cap, means test and raise the retirement age.

Raising the retirement age just seems like a practical thing to do to address changing life expectancy. When most of the Senate and much of the House is older than retirement age, it’s hard to justify not changing it.

They’re all rich. The effect of age is much greater on blue collar workers who may need Social Security more.

I'm just here for the reaction to Hillary dragging Sanders today.

lol

“He was in Congress for years. He had one senator support him. Nobody likes him, nobody wants to work with him, he got nothing done. He was a career politician. It’s all just baloney and I feel so bad that people got sucked into,” Clinton reportedly says.

The former Secretary State went further in the interview, calling out Sanders’s campaign for a problematic “culture” of criticizing opponents.

“It’s not only him, it’s the culture around him. It’s his leadership team. It’s his prominent supporters. It’s his online Bernie Bros and their relentless attacks on lots of his competitors, particularly the women,” Clinton said. “And I really hope people are paying attention to that because it should be worrisome that he has permitted this culture — not only permitted, [he] seems to really be very much supporting it.

He is a career politician. You wouldn’t know that from talking to his supporters who claim he’s an outsider. He’s been in Washington for almost 30 years. In politics total for almost 40 years. He was already mayor when Pete was born.

I’m just really wary of running against Trump with someone who has been in Washington longer than him.
