2020 MLB Season Thread -- Rays v. Dodgers -- Small Payroll v. Large Payroll

Interesting note on the playoffs - for the LDS and LCS games, there will be no off days - they'll play up to 5/7 games in a row. World Series will have the normal days off after Games 2 and 5.

And the Yankees just set a MLB record for most home runs in a three game period with 17 now against Buffalo. And they're only in the fourth inning of the third game with four home runs in the fourth inning tonight.

Edit to add, make that 18 now with a fifth home run (back-to-back-to-back, strikeout, then back-to-back) in the fourth. Buffalo finally pulled the pitcher after the fifth home run.

ChiSox have been a fun team to watch this year. Very good hitting and starting pitching going on at Comiskey.

All their hitters are under contract for awhile too, which is crazy - Abreu and Andreson signed through 2022, Grandal through 2023 - Eloy and Moncada through 2024 and Robert through 2027. They've done a great job building through drafting and trades - they have Gio for a couple of more years, Cease for 4 more.

Wonder if they would take Q back for Eloy and Cease now.

The Quintana and Adam Eaton trades were huge for building this Sox team. Sale trade could still be if Kopech pans out. Getting Giolito and Dunning and López for Eaton was big though.

Verlander is going to get Tommy John now.

Hate to see it - he's 37 right now, and by having surgery now likely means a missed 2021 season (and will be a free agent after that). It would be a lot to come back at 39 and a TJ surgery.

One week to go, the AL side is more settled than the NL side. If the season ended today, the first round would look like this:

AMERICAN LEAGUE
No. 1 Rays* vs. No. 8 Blue Jays
No. 2 White Sox* vs. No. 7 Indians
No. 3 Athletics* vs. No. 6 Astros
No. 4 Twins* vs. No. 5 Yankees*

NATIONAL LEAGUE
No. 1 Dodgers* vs. No. 8 Reds
No. 2 Cubs vs. No. 7 Phillies
No. 3 Braves vs. No. 6 Cardinals
No. 4 Padres* vs. No. 5 Marlins

Magic numbers to clinch playoff spot

NL: Braves 3, Cubs 4, Marlins 6, Cardinals 7

AL: Indians 2, Astros 3, Blue Jays 4

The Cardinals will have to make up their two games at Detroit since it's pretty tight in the NL with Cincinnati, Milwaukee and San Francisco all within 1GB of St. Louis right now. With Detroit not making the playoffs (ESPN has them at 0.1% making it), they would play on Monday (potentially a doubleheader) if it would have an impact on the playoff picture, rather than just letting the Cardinals play 58 and go by winning percentage.

Has the balls and strikes umpiring been historically terrible this year? Some of the games I've watched been absolute shit shows. One of the Phils radio guys has made a career out of complaining about umps, so it's hard to read from him, but he seems taken aback more than usual. Maybe it's always been this bad and people are paying more attention in the absence of fans. I know some sites keep a tally of this sort of thing.

MLB and Turner Sports signed a seven-year $3.7 billion contract extension, constituting 65% increase over the current deal. This is on top of the recent FOX/MLB six year $5.1 billion deal and a $300 million 3 year streaming deal with DAZN.

Seems like baseball owners could afford to put out a little cash this year with that kind of money coming in the near future.

Cheer for the pharmaceutical companies to do good work over the next year.

From Jon Heyman:

MLB: No new positives for any Major League players for 26 straight days and 34 of the last 35 days.

MLB and the players have learned during the season how to play, travel and persevere despite the pandemic. Helpful for NHL, NBA and college sports that they can play without a bubble.

My jays are in. We’ll almost certainly be playing at our house of horrors in Tampa, but it’s nice to be in. :)

My Redlegs going to the playoffs for the first time in forever! They were terrible for the first 30 games of the season, but they’ve won 12 of the last 16 to make it in.
