2020 MLB Season Thread -- Rays v. Dodgers -- Small Payroll v. Large Payroll

Phillies made Bryce Harper a prophet. On Aug 22, he said they needed to go 9-1 in their next 10 games. With the 10th inning walk-off win yesterday over the Nats, they did. First four game sweep of Nats by Phillies in Philly.

Philadelphia doing well with extra game time. Phillies and Flyers.

Right now, there are two Angels tied for the all time team lead in HRs, and they both have names that are also fish.

With 17 days left in the season, here is what the MLB playoff would like if the season ended today:

Best-of-three series, higher seed is home team

AMERICAN LEAGUE
No. 1 Rays vs. No. 8 Yankees
No. 2 Athletics vs. No. 7 Twins
No. 3 White Sox vs. No. 6 Astros
No. 4 Indians vs. No. 5 Blue Jays

NATIONAL LEAGUE
No. 1 Dodgers vs. No. 8 Marlins
No. 2 Braves vs. No. 7 Giants
No. 3 Cubs vs. No. 6 Cardinals
No. 4 Padres vs. No. 5 Phillies

Magic numbers to clinch playoff spot

NL: Dodgers 7, Padres 11, Braves 14, Cubs 14.

AL: Rays 11, White Sox 12, Twins 12, A's 13, Indians 13.

The Wilpons just sold the Mets to Steve Cohen for $2.475 billon, subject to MLB approval. In 1986, the Wilpons bought the Mets for $80 million.

Just a reminder when owners claim they’re losing money, they’ll more than make it up when they cash out.

Will be interesting to see if they make it through the owners approval vote - getting the 23 votes does not sound like it's a sure thing.

Cash flow as opposed to value of the assets.

That being said, they can move a lot of things around on the balance sheet to make the cash flow numbers look better or worse if they want to as well.

Player value can be depreciated. And that depreciation can offset incoming cash.

MLB and MLBPA agree on a bubble plan for the post-season:

NLDS: @ Rangers new park (Globe Life Field) and @ Minute Maid in Houston
ALDS: @ PETCO and Dodger Stadium

NLCS: @ Globe Life Field
ALCS: @ PETCO

W-S: @ Globe Life Field (should be at PETCO, but guessing they don't want a team to have home field advantage and Padres have a legit shot of making the W-S).

Not resolved whether the players families may enter the bubble, and if so, at what stage of the playoffs. Also, still possible that MLB allow at least some fans for all or part of the playoff games.

Yup - they put the NL in Texas to avoid the Padres and/or Dodgers being able to play at home.

There's been some rumblings that the Angels park might also be used in SoCal, especially if the Angels miss the playoffs (which is looking like it).

Also, Seattle has quietly snuck back into the playoff picture, as they're only 1.5 games back of Houston now. They have a three game series against each other in Seattle next week. Astros have played awful lately, but 10 of their last 13 are against Texas and Arizona.

The White Sox would be the #1 seed now in the AL. Their lineup is stacked, and their young arms have pitched well.

They never would have sold the team but they lost all their money to Bernie Madoff. They didn't have the cash flow.
