2020 MLB Season Thread -- Rays v. Dodgers -- Small Payroll v. Large Payroll

Giolito no hits the Pirates. One of many coming against the pirates this year I’m sure.

Pirates ended last night's game with 6 starters hitting .198 or worse. They are 30th in MLB in OPS and 27th in WHIP, with zero quality starts and two team saves for the year

Will Craig was called up this morning and will make his MLB debut for Pittsburgh in the first game of a double header against the Cardinals.

Nats and Phillies are catching up with the sitting out a game movement as they aren't playing tonight.

Red Sox/Blue Jays are contemplating the same.

While there is no right or wrong way to protest, this seems like a day late with Brewers playing a double header today, and the NBA deciding to return this afternoon.

Just turned game on and was coming here to post that. Awesome seeing him out there.

Phillies will retire Dick Allen's number 15. First number to be retired that wasn't worn by a Hall of Fame guy. Allen never got above 20% vote. As great a career as Allen had, it is surprising he isn't in.

Media hated him. But man could he hit.

Yep. He has .292 career batting average. His career OPS is the second highest of anybody not in the hall of fame. He almost won the triple crown in 1972 with the White Sox. He was just shy in batting average.

He was always a threat to put the ball not just over the fence, but completely out of the ballpark with the 42 ounce bat he swung. He hit over the 65 foot roof of Connie Mack Stadium numerous times and cleared the Coca Cola sign on the right center field roof twice.

He was not very friendly with the press. He didn't like that they "renamed" him "Richie" which he considered a little boy's name instead of hid preferred nickname "Dick." (That was a common nickname in the sixties, and did not have the connotations it does today.)

He also was overtly reactive to racial epithets and treatment. He had a dugout fight with team mate Frank Thomas, a known overt racist after Thomas hit Allen with a bat. Thomas was released the next day.

Dick Allen primarily played in an era when pitching dominated to the point that they lowered the height of the mound. So, his offensive numbers may not appear to be as strong in comparison to today's players or players in more offensive eras. That said, he was among the most feared hitters in the game for a considerable period of time.

Also, the Padres are going for it. In the past 48 hours, the Padres have acquired:

- The Royals closer: Trevor Rosenthal
- Starting catchers for both the Mariners and Angels: Jason Castro and Austin Nola
- Red Sox 1st baseman: Mitch Moreland
- Two other bullpen pieces: Austin Adams and Dan Altavilla
- Indians starting pitcher (sent down because he violated COVID rules): Mike Clevinger

Seems like a quantity over quality trade for the Indians. Naylor will slot into their outfield immediately, but beyond that it's hard to see the guys they got making much of an impact on this season for them. With how many teams were supposedly in on the bidding, I'm surprised this is the deal they chose to go with.

The Nats are 12-19 and have the second worst record in the NL and are... buyers. 2020 everyone!

Should be interesting to see that Pads-M's trade in a few years. Pads probably need more pitching to make a serious run at LA.

White Sox in first place! This postseason should be tits.

Clevinger is a good start, and Gore and Patino will be up pretty soon. Padres are gonna be a damn good team for quite a while.

Aaaand as soon as I post that, the Pads trade for Clevinger. Damn.

Diamond Deac and current Cincy Red prospect (2nd round pick in 2017) OF Stuart Fairchild was traded to Arizona Diamondbacks for Archie Bradley.

I would love to see Slam Diego run down the Dodgers and take the West. A fun team just got a lot better.
