Nearly every one of those counties south of Atlanta is 25% to 40% black.
That’s the Black belt effect. High density of slave plantations growing cotton in a belt of fertile soil that swoops across Alabama and then up Mississippi towards Memphis. Geologically it was the coastline like 100 million years ago and the estuaries and coasts left behind very rich soil, good for growing cotton.
