2023 College Football Coaching Carousel

Names thrown around on the Duke Board:

Frank Cignetti (JMU) - He's 62
Jamie Chadwell (Liberty)
Willie Fritz (Tulane) - He's 63
Charles Huff (Marshall) - Marshall coming off a dreadful season
Jason Candle (Toledo)
Bob Chesney (Holy Cross)

Then a bunch of assistants:

Kevin Johns (Duke OC) - Thinking is that if Duke hires Johns Riley Leonhard won't transfer
Sherrone Moore (Michigan)
Ryan Grubb (Washington)
Jim Leonhard (Illinois)
Paul Chryst (Texas)
Sean Lewis (Colorado)

UCLA may be open too. Didn't realize Houston fired Dana Holgorsen. Boise playing for the MWC Championship. Rumors are that they want to hire Chargers OC Kellen Moore.

promoting an OC to head coach just to hold onto one player who at best has one more year of eligibility would be an incredible move.

I'll give you a darkhorse, the head coach of Eastern Michigan, Rick Neuheisel was talking on the radio the other day about how great a job Chris Creighton has done there getting them to bowls in 4 of the last 5 years. Said Eastern Michigan is absolutely one of the hardest places to win in all of college football.

Even more so than Wake, Duke is the perfect stepping stone job. They get more press than we do and can recruit nationally so you're going to get more exposure. They also won't invest the money into football that it's going to take to hang onto an up and comer coach. They're also content to lose a coach since they have the basketball program.

The last Duke head coach to leave Duke for a better job was Steve Spurrier in 1989. No one else ever had a shot before Elko, and Elko was smart to get out after only two seasons.

Grobe definitely and Clawson probably had opportunities to leave for more money.

According to Lauren Walsh, Middle Tennessee State relieved Rick Stockstill of his duties.
18 years for the Blue Raiders; only Kirk Ferentz, Mike Gundy and Kyle Whittingham have longer tenures at their schools than Stockstill.

Duke, and I hate to admit it, and Wake are two jobs you better get in and get out quickly if you aspire to loftier positions. See 2023 as Exhibit A.

And didn't.

Mike MacIntyre (FIU) was high on their list before Elko, but I reckon he's fallen too far from his National Coach of the Year days ('16).

Exactly. You're going to get better exposure at Duke given it's more of a national brand than Wake is but it's the same dynamic. You have a great scheme, older players, everyone underestimates you and you sneak up on people, etc. but then opposition figures out your offense and guys graduate and you take a major step back. It's a 2-3 year window every 7 years.

What's the obsession with former Cowboys Coach Jason Garrett going to Duke on either side? It's not like he's from the area or played there. If he was going to get back into coaching- would make a lot more sense for him to go to a Texas school. SMU, Baylor, TCU, Rice, North Texas, etc.

Yeah, I was thinking about that too, be the first time in awhile Duke has hired a coach with the program on the uptick instead of a dumpster fire.

Well, I may be contradicting myself a little here, but Cutcliffe went to four straight bowls and had a 10-win season in 2013, which was his first winning season, and he was 59 years old a the time, which is three years older than Clawson is now.

This isn't a terrible tenure, but if you only get to 6-6 in Year 5, you're probably not getting a big SEC job, especially since you already fizzled out at Ole Miss after Eli Manning went pro. Cut only went 24-17 with Manning starting for three years.
