2024 Wake Baseball Thread: What Did We Do To Deserve This?

Here are the ACC Baseball Standings... With an unbalanced schedule, standings are greatly a function of who you are playing WF is 4-5 and went 2-1 against L'ville. VT is 8-1 and went 2-1 against L'ville. The Hokies have gone 6-0 against BC and ND.

FWIW, not discounting that the Deacs have a lot of work to do, but if the start of the year, it was revealed that through the third ACC series and more than 40% of the regular season:

  • Kurtz would struggle, get injured and miss two of the first three ACC series
  • Houston would suffer multiple injuries and miss two of the first three ACC series
  • Chris Katz would have one hit
  • Roland would not play, and the closer situation would be unsettled
  • Josh Hartle would have a 7+ ERA
  • Michael Massey would be injured and miss one ACC series and be limited to two innings in the next one
  • Every freshman pitcher would have an ERA of 6+ or more
  • Ben Shenosky would pitch well except for his one start at Coastal where he hit three times as many batter as outs he would record
  • WF catching situation would be unsettled and the defense behind the plate would be poor

The common wisdom that WF wouldn't be ranked, and the season would be on life-support. Instead WF is #12 in the country, and the Deacs look to be getting healthier, and have built some lineup depth. Not saying everything is gravy from here on out, the real possibility exists for the season to completely tank, but given the circumstances, and a run to decent health (not clear if that will happen, but things are trending positively), WF is still in position to host a super-regional with a strong back half of the regular season.

I think it's interesting/encouraging to note that Vegas still has this team in the CWS finals, at #2:

At this point last year, we were still considered a 3rd-tier contender... with odds between +1800 and +2000

College baseball futures are very slow to adjust.
Vegas does not know college ball. I would take advantage of these lines while you can

Edit-- just realized it's for the actual finals themselves but I assume you could find good lines for who'll actually be in Omaha

With starting to get some key pieces back in the lineup, it feels like now is the time for this Wake team. Need to do something like 8-2 over the next 10 (or better) to really prove that we're as good as we thought we were.

Great, the color guy pitched at Liberty and is already referring to them as "we."
