Advice for soccer noobs

MLS has higher average attendance than both the NBA and the NHL. Sure, TV is where the money is, but that fact is still somewhat surprising.

Dont let RJ hear that, it messes with his made up numbers, and then the wrong math he does with his made up numbers.

MLS is in outdoor stadiums. The NBA and NHL are in indoor arenas. NFL and MLB would be better comparisons for MLS.

How do they compare in terms of percent capacity?

MLS stadiums aren't huge. Only 4 of them have a capacity of over 27k.

DC is getting ready to spend big bucks for a United stadium down by Nats Park. Should help to fully revitalize the neighborhood (it's already thriving right around Nats Park, but less so over where the United stadium will be). There is a huge following in this country and OWGs (like rj and TheReff) just don't want to admit their ignorance.

wow, really, that low? Surprising to me.

They're indoor arenas. Only 8 basketball arenas in the world are 22k or bigger. The biggest is Rupp Arena at 23.5k unless you count the Carrier Dome. Greensboro Coliseum and the Dean Dome are two of the 10 biggest in the world.

That's why the NCAA is using more domed stadiums for the NCAA Tournament so they can sell more than just 20k tickets.

None of the NBA or NHL arenas are over 22k.
Not sure your point, only three MLS stadiums are above 22k (and most settle around 15-20k just like arenas). Sure, Seattle tips the scale a bit by consistently being at 40k+ but it's still impressive to be over 1k above NBA/NHL even with that.

22k average attendance or 22K max capacity for their stadiums?

"The Sounders averaged 44,038 fans a game at CenturyLink Field this year, more than double any other MLS team, and more than double what MLB's Seattle Mariners averaged this season."

Also, Sounders play at Century Link. and close off some parts of the upper deck. So they are hovering near 100%. Mariners games aren't half full.

22k average attendance or 22K max capacity for their stadiums?
I assumed Ph was talking about max capacities at arenas, so I looked at max capacities for MLS stadiums. Although when the league started out games used to be played in NFL stadiums (which could push the average attendances higher), most now play in soccer specific stadiums, whose max capacities are about 18-22k except for a few outliers which are higher.

Only 5 MLS stadiums are under 20k. Only 5 NBA arenas and 2 NHL are over 20k.

Haha. A roof and AC are very expensive. Not everybody can have it both ways like your boy Jerry.

How's man city? I liked Kompany during the game and his respect for Timmy. Decent team to hop on board with?

A lot of likable players, but they're very much a team that will buy their way to success. Not suggesting that's a bad thing; they play very entertaining and attractive soccer, and will be competitive seemingly forever or until they change ownership again. But very much a team that spends big. This is a recent development as they were bought by one of the richest men on Earth a few years ago.
