At least 172 Palestinians killed, 1,280 injured, UN says 77% are civilians

U.S.: Palestinian-American minor killed by Israeli military

CNN) -- A Palestinian-American minor has been killed by the Israel Defense Forces, according to the U.S. State Department.

According to a press release from the State Department, the individual was killed Friday during clashes in Silwad, a town in the West Bank.

The Israel Defense Forces said an "attack was prevented" when the military fired upon a male hurling a Molotov cocktail on a main road with traffic. The Israeli military declined to comment further on the individual's identity and health status.

"We call for a speedy and transparent investigation, and will remain closely engaged with the local authorities, who have the lead on this investigation," said Jen Psaki, the spokeswoman for the State Department.

So what is the deal with this whole brouhaha over the Palestinians wanting to join the ICC? Seems to me that we live in a sad world where the US, as the purported flag-bearer of liberalism and democracy, would follow the lead of Israel and punish the Palestinians for taking non-violent measures to advance their cause as opposed to violent resistance.

Israel exonerates itself over Gaza beach killings of four children last year

Israel has investigated the bombing of four children and cleared themselves of all wrongdoing, claiming that they believed the kids were militants.

An account of the investigation, posted late on Thursday by military spokesman Lt Col Peter Lerner, said the strike had targeted a “compound” which had been known as belonging to Hamas’s Naval Police and Naval Force (including naval commandos)”.

But journalists who attended the scene in the immediate aftermath of the attack – including a reporter from the Guardian – saw a small and dilapidated fisherman’s hut containing a few tools where the children had been playing hide-and-seek.

Mohammad Ramiz Bakr, 11, Ahed Atef Bakr and Zakariya Ahed Bakr, both 10, and Ismail Mahmoud Bakr, nine, were killed when they were hit by explosive rounds. Three of them died as they sought to flee the beach after the first child was killed.

Interesting piece from Molly Crabapple:

The Oppressive Architecture of the West Bank

The Israelis who have encamped in the Old City have gone so far to build atop existing structures, so that the modern architecture crushes the past. In Sayeed's case, settlers built a new wing fused onto his home. According to Sayeed, they cross over the adjoined rooftop and sometimes throw trash in his water tanks. In 2007, he claimed, they broke into one of his rooms and threw in a Molotov cocktail, an apparent attempt to drive the family from their home. Sayeed's kid brother took me down to the room, where the floor and walls were still scorched black.

I visited Hebron in early June, two months before yet another alleged arson attack by settlers burned alive an 18-month-old infant named Ali Dawabsheh in the West Bank village of Duma. Days later, Ali's father Saad succumbed to the burns that covered 80 percent of his body.

About 650,000 Israelis live in West Bank settlements, including 300,000 who live in East Jerusalem. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, they attacked Palestinians and their property 399 times in 2013. Hebron settlers account for a disproportionate amount of violence. In one week in February 2015, settlers in Hebron governorate committed four out of five of the assaults logged by the UN—beating a ten-year-old boy with an iron bar, cutting down 40 olive trees, uprooting 550 saplings, and beating a 55-year-old shepherd while he was grazing his sheep.

Over the years, Levinger has been accused multiple times of committing violence against the Palestinians he lives alongside. In 1988, angry that his car had been stoned, he randomly fired bullets into a crowded marketplace, killing a Palestinian shopkeeper, an act for which he served 92 days in jail.

[h=2]Is this disturbing video Israel's Eric Garner moment?[/h]
and captured the moment.
In the video, the soldier throws himself on Tamimi, putting the boy in a headlock and holding him over a rock as he screams for help. There is a moment, at 1:06 in the video, when the soldier holds his rifle next to the boy's head and, disregarding the most basic weapons safety training, places his finger over the gun's trigger. Thankfully, after a moment he slings the rifle behind his shoulder, but then tries to wrestle and carry the boy off. After a short struggle, the soldier places his hand around the back of the child's neck and pushes his face into one of the rocks.
Several nearby women from the protest then attempt to intervene. One woman tries to pull the soldier's arms behind his back; he panics and grabs the boy again. Tamimi's young sister curls around her brother, shielding his body with her own as she attempts to drag him away, but the soldier pushes his hand into her neck and shoves her away. The nearby women again throw themselves on top of the soldier and, at this point, another soldier, reportedly the first's commander, intervenes, eventually pulling him away. The soldier punches and slaps at several of the Palestinians as he's led away, throwing what appears to be a tear gas grenade or other non-explosive grenade on the ground.

i was in NYC a couple weekends ago and there was a palestinian protest marching about midtown and a smaller israeli counter-protest. that night the local news mentioned the protests and then showed short comments from two different pro-israeli protestors and zero from the palestinian contingent #fairandbalanced

These three videos are just crazy.

It's apartheid. American sponsored apartheid. Our government, Democrat & Republican are complicit in all those deaths.

No inquiry into Gaza border deaths, says Israeli defense minister

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman on Sunday rejected calls for an inquiry into the deaths of at least 15 Palestinians, saying that troops “deserve a commendation” for their response to protests at the Gaza border.

fucking hell

At Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, administrative workers at the reception showed computer records that listed 283 people admitted with injuries sustained in the border demonstrations. Eight were referrals from other hospitals. Al-Shifa is the main medical facility in the Gaza Strip but one of more than a dozen hospitals and clinics that took in casualties.

“Most of them were direct gunshots to the lower limbs,” said Ayman al-Sahbani, head of Al-Shifa’s emergency department. He said the injured included 11 women and 70 children under 18.
