Biden/Schumer/Pelosi Accountability Thread

Sure. Are you claiming that the 60% of people who voted for $15 in Florida doesn’t include any moderates that Democrats need?

I think I’m arguing that the moderates who like a $15 minimum wage might like a democrat who ran on it

I think that can be true with it also being true that there are moderates that while they support a $15 minimum wage in a vacuum would view a politician running on it as too liberal and be concerned about what other sort of liberal agenda that candidate would enact.

I’m unclear about what I’m saying that’s controversial or hard to understand here. Run politicians that support popular positions and you’ll win popular votes. Muddying your message for a dwindling, largely made up on paper portion of the electorate that’s on the fence feels insane to me.

Not sure 15 mw is the best example. You can be for that because it directly affects and helps a lot of people. The same people that are viewed as hard working and could use some help while the people at the top keep making most of the money on their labor. Those same people can be against things that are seen as "socialist." Conservatives have done a great job framing socialism as inherently anti American. I would argue the opposite is true but I grew up hearing stuff like "I'm for helping people with a safety net but not turning that into a hammock", a hand up nit a handout, or cutting "entitlements" by implying, and saying out loud, they lead to lazy citizens. The assumption republicans make that poor people are poor because they don't want to work is ingrained in their worldview and has done real damage to the country and keeps us living in the past.

This is my problem with appealing to that crowd. You can’t be all things to all people. But you can try and help the greatest number of people with the broadest appealing policies, like:

Paid maternity leave (84% of the public)
Expanded federal support for child care, such as making tax credits permanent (75% of the public)
$15 minimum wage (60% public support)
Tuition free public college (57% public support inc 60% of independents)

All four of these, going back to the 2020 primaries, have broad support across party lines, and if Dems don’t want to step up and support them vocally they’ll get outflanked by rube donk right populists like Rubio.

I don't disagree townie. One thing I agree with biden on his framing the dem bills as "bi-partisan" because of the brod public support. Keep the pressure on the GQP and their obstructionist partisan power grabs. The dems are not doing well enough on the latter.

just stop dickstepping and do it already

biden actually has it fully within his authority to federally deschedule the drug! but of course he's one of the architects of our current carceral state.

Sounds like the House will pass the SAFE banking act again this afternoon. Schumer has said he doesn't want to pass it on it's own in the Senate but wants it combined with sentencing reform. Seems like he's just dragging his feet on all of this. He could put a vote on legalizing marijuana tomorrow and likely get it passed. Red and blue states all over are legalizing as they see the huge tax returns other states are getting.

I see what you did there.

Starting a job at a cannabis company in about a week. Have a lot to learn about the industry, but I know they will be pleased the SAFE Banking Act should get passed soon.

Hell something like 50% of republicans support legalization.

The fact that Biden wont move on this is exactly what's wrong with that old fuck.

Would be nice to not have to pay cash at dispensaries

Would be great for weed stores to be able to issue their own credit cards so we can earn weed points.

Would be even better for cannabis companies to work for the release of people arrested on drug charges and then hire them. Even better if they admit they’re benefitting from decades of using police violence to hurt the competition.

Can you expand on what you mean by this?

You lost me on that last part.

People have been selling weed for decades. Many of them went to prison for it.
