what does it say about these programs that burning several millions to buy out a coach is actually in the common thing to do camp now
There is a lot more money to be made winning than there is keeping a coach who will go 7-5.

the zero-sum element of sports makes the coaching thing pretty interesting to me because you can only have winning coaches because of the losing coaches

it's not like most other professions where a pool of 100 practitioners can all successfully complete a given task -- when the task is winning, only half of coaches can succeed

Considering the expectations of most P5 fanbases, a LOT less than half of coaches can truly “succeed” on a year in/year out basis. Hell, there’s even people that think Clawson is no longer succeeding at Wake now that he’s on the verge of his first losing season in years

not true. 60% go to bowl games. so 60% must be succeeding

right, was just keeping it to a one-game scenario here, but yes, played out over time and with expectations being that >50% win percentage is insufficient then the phenomenon is exacerbated

But only 6 active who have national championships. If you’re paying a coach north of 8 mill a year, that is what you consider successful. Andy Avalos at Boise had made bowls in each of his years and was still fired, so what is considered successful differs from school to school.

The state of college $ is sad and gross. Sports is just one wing of it. Universities are real estate, hedge fund, venture capital companies, and pro sports conglomerates operating under the veil of education.

i feel a LITTLE bad about forcing the rasslin talk to an official separate thread. it's just chatting
