Chicago Cubs Thread - Playoff Push Pending

Schedule for the Brewers the rest of the way is so woof. At least the Pirates have been playing well of late. Cubs need a Brewers cool down somewhere.

Also, if the Cubs and Reds end up tied in the standings the Reds have the tie breaker. Have to keep winning games.

The odds are the Cubs play the Phillies or Brewers if they make the playoffs. The best option is to chase down the Brewers and play the 6th seed which will probably be the Dbacks, Marlins, Reds or Giants.

The Giants are not a very good defensive team. Cubs win 11-8 on a night with the wind blowing out pretty hard. Two errors officially but a number of awkward plays lead to more outs and more runs for the Cubs. Seiya has 4 hits including a game tying HR with 2 outs in the 7th. A few hitters later Morel hits a 431 foot 3 run jack to dead center. Brewers, Reds and Marlins all win. D-Backs and Phils are both out West and presently trailing.

Team has now scored 10+ runs 23 times this year. That’s the most of any Cubs team since 1935. Also the top team in the NL scoring 4+ runs in an inning since the ASB - ahead of both LA and ATL.

Wicks with another strong start - in his first 3 MLB starts, he has a 2.16 ERA over16 innings with 13ks and 4 walks. Huge.

Brewers already lost, so if the Cubs can hold a 6 run lead in the 9th they will be 2 back.

1.5 back of Brewers with 22 games left is more than I hoped for to start the year. This team has outperformed my hopes. Been fun… keep it going

Storman apparently started throwing as well. When he gets back… Do they go to 6-man rotation or move a current starter to the pen?

Remaining Cubs Schedule:

4 D-Backs
3 @ Rockies
3 @ D-Backs
3 Pirates
3 Rockies
3 @ Braves (maybe they have everything clinched by then)
3 @ Brewers (very good chance this series decides the NL Central)

Remaining Brewers Schedule:

3 @ Yankees
4 Marlins
3 Nationals
4 @ Cardinals
3 @ Marlins
3 Cardinals
3 Cubs

Good win. Wicks with a solid start. Every spot in the lineup got on base and produced a run. That is why this team has scored 10+ runs on 23 occasions. A team can't have a deeper lineup than nine men and the Cubs have that at present. Everyone is performing to the level their career numbers would suggest. Tauchman is the pleasant surprise every quality team needs to succeed. Bellinger has returned to his legit MVP form and Suzuki has stepped up the .300+/.400+/<500+ level of his Japanese career. What it takes to win.

Props to the organization for developing the pitching. Today's pitching is an example. Wicks was drafted with the belief he would make a quick rise thru the minors to a place in the rotation. So far, so good. Daniel Palencia and Luke Little were starters sent to Arizona this season to learn and convert to a relief role in the bigs this year. Both have 100+ mph heaters and a quality breaking pitch. Palencia has survived a rough patch to excel. Little flashed in his first appearance this afternoon. He showed a 97 mph fastball but can crank it to 103mph. 225 K's in 140 innings in the minors. Another LHP in the bullpen is always welcome. Smyley showing well also.

Maybe a Central division championship is not out of the question.

Remember a few years back when the knock on the Cubs was they couldn’t develop pitching. Well, they went back to the drawing board and seem to have figured it out. Assad, Steele, Wicks all starting and shoving right now (Assad is just such a competitor). Palencia, Little, etc. in the pen. Brown, Horton and more down on the farm progressing.

And to your point, what makes them solid right now is their depth. It is why a rebuild where you tear it all down was the right move. That no half measures approach now has them sitting on a deep, top 5 farm system to go with their financial resources. Half measures would have seen it take a couple of years longer in all likelihood.

Hoyer and co. took a ton of flack from the media and Cubs twitter. Hoyer and co. were right.

Tauchman has been slumping a bit recently, but I agree it seems unlikely PCA will get many at bats in critical situations this year.

PCA will be in the dugout tonight. Colorado has more outfield than any park in MLB. This is a prospect with an 80 grade on defense and a MiLB Gold Glove in his first full season of professional baseball. If there is any park that would highlight outfield defense (especially range) it's Coors field. I'd be tempted to start PCA in CF and bat him ninth. Speed and precise routes can pay big dividends at Coors.

In more important news, Alzolay put on the 15 day IL with right forearm strain. Fullmer activated as his replacement. Canario was sent to Iowa to make room for PCA on the active roster. Anthony Kay DFA to make roster space on 40 man roster.

Tauchman gets a PH single. PCA pinch runs for him. Hit and run gets him to 2nd on a ground out by Madrigal. He then tries to steal third and is gunned down by a great throw and tag combo. He’s now out there in CF. And per the Rockies announcers he will be starting in tomorrow’s game.

3-1 B7 Cubs.
