Conference Expansion: Stanford, California and SMU Join the ACC

Per ACC Bylaws, an absolute 2/3 majority (10 vores) is required to change the Media Rights Agreement or payout formula.
I mean after we end up consolidated into the two TV portfolios. Especially when the dust settles and each conference has 2-4 teams basically playing a different brand of football than the rest.

The seven schools can fuss. But at the end of the meetings, I don't expect much to change. Equal revenue sharing has been one of the things conferences do. Those that didn't (most recently Big 12) had break up issues.

Re-alignment will only happen if there is money to make it worthwhile. Diamond Sports/Bally regional networks are in bankruptcy. Added spending from them is unlikely until the bankruptcy is finished.

ESPN/ABC/Disney is cutting costs. Why would they pay more for the schools currently in the ACC to be in the SEC?

Fox has indicated they aren't really interested in increasing the payout unless the income side (via carriage fees etc.) goes up. All seven schools don't move that needle for Fox.

Neither of the other two major network brands (CBS and NBC) have shown much interest in bidding for college football when they had opportunities.

The Athletic had a Philadelphia contracts specialist attorney reviewed the Grant of Rights documents from ACC and Big 12 a year ago. His conclusion was that they would be extremely difficult to break.

No one has provided a good source for the "eight votes dissolves the ACC" position. It may well take a 2/3 (10) or 3/4 (12) super majority.

This issue provides writers something to do. It doesn't seem rational for a majority of the members of the ACC to vote to take money from their pockets and give it to a few who claim they bring "greater value" to the conference.

Perhaps a majority could vote to reduce the shares of a minority of the conference members. That would have massive negative implications for the conference.
I think that this is most likely correct. It is why the schools like FSU, Clemson, and Miami are whining about not getting a bigger share of the ACC revenue. They know that they have nowhere else to go at this point.

Interesting unsubstantiated rumor from the reddit thread. Probably not true, but fun to imagine.

I would love for this to be true. But I thought the meeting was a secret 7s only meeting. Not questioning you, I’m just trying to understand more

Can we agree that bowl games probably aren’t going away in the new conference era?

Are they more likely to take a 2-8 mississippi atate or virginia team from one of the big TV conferences or a 9 win team from the second tier ACC?

The thing that seems lost in all these discussions about realignment is that competitive balance has always been and will remain a myth. Assume nc state ends up in the Fox Corp. conference, do we suddenly think they are challenging ohio state for the top spot? They likely finish around .500 every few years and get their shit This pushed in by the teams with much bigger pockets. Just look at maryland. Their games are like mausoleums,’but they have cash to spend at off debts from a poorly managed stadium expansion so yay team.

TLDR most of these teams think more money makes them Alabama but there will be more vanderbilts than alabamas.
I’m not sure this is really lost at all. None of the fanbases see this money in any form, even in on-field performance. The only thing having to do with money that they see is more $$$ to travel to Iowa City than drive to W-S.

Ok. So the 7 decided to step into a side room for their own meeting? What a dick move.
The reported 7 have been having their own meetings for months. I don’t think they are having side meetings at Amelia Island.

To me the only revelation in this news is which wagon was hitched to unc. Seems like the theory that the GA would force their hand on state over duke was correct. I still contend that unc and uva are the two most likely desired properties to the two tv portfolios, and the expectation is that both of them have coattails. I still hold that this carousel ends in regret for those fanbases. Happy ADs and coaches with more money in their pockets and less pressure to actually, you know, manage a budget like an adult, but I just don't see unc fans being satisfied with cucking their conference success like gamecock fans for the long haul.

I think what schools like Wake Forest will see long term are more meaningful regular seasons with geographic rivals. We won't keep successful coaches for as long, so we'll need to be sharp with our prospecting and hiring to stay relevant. Again, I think I'm more exciting about that long term especially as TV availability becomes less of a thing with production costs where they are now digitally.

I still don’t understand the UVA attraction. I get that they are a big school with good academics but football is driving this. My wife is a ‘Hoo. We go to games occasionally. Wake draws more than they do, even when they are good.

VA tvs with quality academics and well resourced school.

Those are the companies that own ESPN.
Does ESPN save money if the ACC re-organizes and teams leave? I know a lookin is triggered if we add a team, but can ESPN say, I paid x when you were 14 and now you're worth x- now?

There is something to the idea that as TV moves to a subscription model rather than a cable model that big fanbases matter more than TV markets. FSU and Clemson can move the needle with subscriptions. UNC and State probably can too. I don't think UVA can

That's a fair point. One of the biggest disadvantages the ACC has is also what make it great - the schools are relatively small.

Also why I think once we get through this chaos, we end up with TV networks just paying schools directly like 20 years from now.

Wake's biggest issue is that there are only tens of Wake fans that didn't go to Wake...unlike the Clemsons (due to FB championships) or FSU (for previous success and a shit-hole state).
growing up in NC, everyone was a Carolina fan or lesser State. Duke only has fans because of their BB history...i expect that to simmer down under their new coach.

Everything is negotiable, but ESPN needs inventory.
