Conference Expansion: Stanford, California and SMU Join the ACC

ND wants Stanford to remain a major conference team because they play every year. Even better if they are an ACC team and can count towards NDs obligatory ACC games. Cal not nearly the lynchpin of NDs schedule, but probably the same to a lesser degree here. ACC needs to definitely not back down on the mandatory games. If they want to play Stanford every year anyway, fine, but don't let them out of one of their other four games.

You know that the ACC will just bend over and take whatever ND is willing to give.

Maybe Notre Dame values universities will strong academic profiles. Stanford and Cal certainly meet that criteria.

Remember this. No football team in history has traveled more mile to play games than ND and I don have to look it up. They laughing at West Coast teams worried about flight times.

Notre Dame will do what is required to ensure their opportunity to play for the highest level football championship possible. If that requires joining a conference to do so, they will join a conference. One phone call and they can join the SEC or B1G. Maybe, just maybe, membership in those conferences is unattractive to them. An ACC that includes Cal and Stanford might better reflect their values. An ACC that includes Notre Dame might be very attractive to the media.

University dynamics. Imagine… Wake Chem. Prof sees STANFORD. Could be ACC. This dude on it. Meanwhile back at the 120 mililion Football build its a different vibe. This is state of negotiation all levels.

That would be a significant loss to the existing conference members for Stanford to take one of those 5 games every year. Does Stanford give up something for that special treatment, too?

There is zero chance of Notre Dame joining the ACC as a Football member for the foreseeable future.
Any discussion of such is a waste of everyone’s time. You’d be better served arguing about law school tiers and an all time list of college golfers.

I'm taking a long term view on conference realignment but I realize that everything can change rapidly. All it takes is for the B1G and the SEC to see more financial benefits to be gained by quick, short term action. Three years ago the topic of conversation was expanding the playoffs. Two years ago the B1G was supporting an alliance between the ACC, the PAC and the B1G. If you're not a member of the big two, you best be thinking short term and long term.

No phone call right now can get ND in the SEC or Big 10. They are contractually committed to the ACC if they join a conference. It has to be the ACC until that contract runs out.

Def make them add to the ACC requirements

Contracts are meaningless if you have enough money. ND is not joining the ACC in football.

That's my fault for not knowing the numbers. I meant that Stanford should not fulfill one of the required ACC games, just didn't remember how many they were contracted to play

Would ND be willing to go to 5 games a year against the ACC in order to get Stanford in the league? They could then get their yearly match against the Cardinal without a loss of quality OOC inventory for the rest of the league

ND already plays 5 games now against the ACC (not counting Stanford). This year, ND plays six (not counting Stanford):

@ NC State
@ Duke
@ L'ville
Pitt
@ Clemson
