COVID Thread 2: Operation Ludicrous Speed ! (Super Political!!!)

I think it was more people were like What's the fuck?, the mask only helps if I have it and I don't know it and it only protects others and not me? I feel fine, fuck it.

If from the beginning it was like "initial viral load matters, you die if you get a lot of it, and you don't if you get a little, and the mask helps make it a little" you'd have a different outcome here.

Nothing is or was going to get these dumb fucking anti maskers to wear a mask.

a higher death rate and the mask protecting you sure as shit would. This only became an issue really once reports were that it was mostly the brown folks dying.

No, it became an issue when the president said he wasn’t going to wear a mask even though the CDC issued mask wearing guidelines, and his illogical idiotic followers followed suit. You are giving the Trump death cult a lot more credit than is warranted.

Why do people fucking love cruises so much? It’s baffling.

Womp womp.

A study was published today in JAMA that showed a common antidepressant, fluvoxamine, prevents those with mild covid from deteriorating. More investigation is needed because it was a pretty small trial. I’m not sure what to make of it, but there’s some promise there.

Agreed. There are several factors for why anti-maskers wouldn't wear them, but the greatest single factor by far was Trump not wearing one and his followers enthusiastically going along. Had Trump not turned mask-wearing into a political issue, and had he encouraged them to wear a mask from the beginning, I don't think it would be nearly as much of a problem. If Dear Leader ain't wearing one, I ain't either, and no damn librul expert can tell me otherwise!

Never been on one of those Florida-based cruises and don't really care to go, but I know a good number of people who have and from what I can gather the ships are basically floating shopping malls and gambling casinos, with the occasional stopover for passengers to get more tourist stuff on land. I do know folks who enjoy them, so to each their own I guess. I will say that traveling on one of those cruise ships in the middle of a pandemic is pretty stupid.

did one cruise and it was very much what Highland says. The cruise ships tell you "don't go off the strip. Stay in the tourist areas near the dock because just 2 blocks away its DANGEROUS! You won't be safe.

What they won't tell you is that the first question you are asked at any of those shops and restaurants is what cruise ship are you on? They give a kickback to those ships so the ships don't want you spending money locally.

Whelp. If we're at 150k cases a day now, and we have a 50% jump next week followed by a 60% jump the following week, schools would start getting shutdown everywhere in 2 weeks.

That's when schools are closing anyway.

Right now, the spike seems related to the Election. We're at a million a week. Then we're going to have Thanksgiving and Christmas spikes going into mid-January and the inauguration. By the time Biden gets into office, we could be looking at 1.5M to 2M a week.

I mean I read 150k verified cases a day translates into an actual real case count of 3-4M cases per week in reality as we stand now, as only a fraction of all cases actually get tested and verified.

But given our case count went up 40% week over week, even using the official count, we're looking at 1.5M a week starting next week (not when Biden gets in office) if that continues for another week.

And Republicans will be sure to blame the pandemic and the covid surge on Biden, and will pretend that Donald Trump and crazy GOP governors around the country had nothing to do with it. And their base will believe it immediately. Same with the economic downturn caused by the covid lockdown.

Outside of Obamacare and healthcare in general..... what are the democratic positions, and how are they marketed that help the rural white voter?

Democrats actually take the virus seriously. They wear masks and social distance.

Uneducated white people still not wearing a mask. This is why I will not go within 100 miles of a Wal-MArt.
