Donald Impeachment

i know when i used to say 'fiscally conservative' that's not at all what I believed or desired.

right, but the fact is that the past several iterations of Republican rule have proven that debt-fuelled tax cuts for the rich and wasteful military spending is exactly what electing Republicans achieves. I felt the same way up until the Bush years when the scales fell off my eyes. the last straw for me was the idea that Sarah Palin would be a qualified Vice President. She and the rest of the know-nothing arm of the GOP also give the lie to the "fiscally conservative" thing. They refuse to believe in facts or science or statistics, so how could I possibly trust them to run the government efficiently or wisely?

oh i agree, i just mean there's a gulf between Ph's statement and ignorant voters

I don’t understand what “fiscally conservative” even means anymore. It seems just like a buzzword for white people to reject all the reasons why they shouldn’t be a conservative anymore because the movement (as much as there ever was one) has been bastardized and hijacked by evangelicals and Trumpites. The GOP in power is one of the least fiscally conservative governments we have ever seen, they just spend the money on things that are more palatable to so-called conservatives (i.e, not on “handouts” and “welfare” but on big guns and planes rawr).

Fiscal conservativism is just as much a sham as the rest of conservativism.

No, my Pub friends, save 2, realize the current iteration of their party is a joke and is not acting in a fiscally conservative manner. They're Rockefeller laissez faire types who don't care for today's Pub social agenda and just want low taxes and spending. I wouldn't call their beliefs a sham. But I would say that Barca has an excellent point that they might be naive in believing that once they get Trump out things will go back to normal. Like Barca, I believe that this is the new normal - 85% of self identifying Pubs love this shit. And that 85% is not going to give $$ to and go support Mitt Romney or Ben Sasse after Trump is gone. They are going to be in search of a new demagogue who wants to destroy the republic.

Indeed. I keep seeing posts from old high school and hometown friends on facebook bitching about the awful tyranny of "democratic socialism" that will overwhelm and bankrupt America if pretty much any Dem (but especially Warren or Sanders) is elected POTUS. Some directly reference Venezuela, which I guess has replaced Cuba as the new Latin American bugaboo for conservatives. What's really interesting is the number of these people that are underemployed and on Medicaid or Obamacare. One just posted recently about how Medicare-for-All would add tens of thousands of dollars in taxes to each American:

"If you support Medicare-for-All, I have to ask one question. Have you bothered to do the math? I don't care what you have been told, I am asking if you have done the math. The estimated cost is about 2.8-3.2 trillion dollars a year..... it will be more than that simply because the government is involved. However lets go with that figure. In 2019 127,939,000 tax returns were filed. This means on average those returns will have to show a $21,885.42-25,011.92 increase to pay for this. This is pretty close to what our insurance cost is now without a subsidy. We can't afford the subsidized policy. If you support this idiocy, just go ahead and send your check to me."

BTW, this guy has no college education, has never left my hometown to live anywhere else, and currently lives off his wife's income - and hates Democrats with a passion. But he's an expert on pretty much everything. Just ask him.

And hacks. Especially clowns like Tom Nichols.

The new Republicanism. Someone who doesn't understand basic statistics calls this guy:

Thomas M. Nichols (born December 7, 1960) is an academic specialist on international affairs, currently a professor at the U.S. Naval War College and at the Harvard Extension School. His work deals with issues involving Russia, nuclear weapons, and national security affairs. He was previously a fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, and the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University

a clown because he insists on holding the Republican party to some standard of behavior.

There is no room in modern Republicanism for an honest, informed, and thoughtful person.

Get out.

Math checks out

Sounds like Bill Taylor may have brought the heat today in hearing. Dude seems credible as hell. Can't wait for Donald to start trashing him.

“Ambassador Sondland said that he had talked to President Zelenskyy and Mr. Yermak and told them that, although this was not a quid pro quo, if President Zelenskyy did not ‘clear things up’ in public, we would be at a ‘stalemate,' " Taylor says of his Sept. 8 phone call with Sondland. “I understood a ‘stalemate’ to mean that Ukraine would not receive the much-needed military assistance.”

... did he seriously say "this is not a quid pro quo" before describing the quid pro quo? I hope he winked. Dramatically.

not sure where in the 1st world now or historically austerity has driven economic growth anywhere near the levels that progressive taxation along with healthy gov spending on its labor force and infrastructure reach. Those are beliefs are certainly a pipe dream/sham.

See Kasich, John.

John Kasich positioned himself as more fiscally conservative, but he's only succeeded in that because the rest of the GOP is so insane, and he's less loony by comparison. The truth is that Kasich seriously curtailed abortion rights in Ohio while he was governor. He just did it quietly rather than talking about it all the time.
