Final Four Referees

How the heck Les Jones made the final four is beyond me. I remember being behind the UNC-G bench during a game earlier this year. Les Jones calls a foul. The official scorer says who is the foul on? He looks up and throws his hands in the air and says, I DUNNO... Then proceeds to the monitor to identify who fouled.. SMH. That should never happen..

Sure it can happen. You have guys in the lane, going up for rebounds all together, or several going up on a shooter to block a shot and they all collide. You are trying to make sure you have the shooter's number, if the shot went in and look back to get the fouler's number and they have moved. You might have seen two different players foul a player, one from in front & one from behind. You have to figure out who fouled first & do it quickly. You also have several in a group that could have been fouled and coaches will try to put their best shooter at the line to see if you catch it. That could be a "T" for deception, but is not ever called

You can't have a game without a basketball hoop either...but the hoops don't try to make the game about them.

If the ball does not go into the hole, they always blame it on tight rims. Or the basket has a lid over it. Thus the game is all about the hoop.

You can have a game without coaches, but seemingly every game it is all about them and how they act.

That was your response? :tard:

The call I was referring to was a 2 on 1 fast break.

Sure it can happen. You have 11-12 year old girls in the lane, going up for rebounds all together, or several going up two inches on a shooter to block a shot and they all collide pre-puberty breasts. You are trying to make sure you have the shooter's number, if the shot went in, to make the score 8-5 at half, and look back to get the fouler's number and they have moved. You might have seen two different players foul a player, one from in front & one from behind, before the shooter hit the side of the backboard. You have to figure out who fouled first & do it quickly, to shorten the fan's agony. You also have several in a group that could have been fouled and coaches will try to put their best shooter, at 23%, at the line to see if you catch it. That could be a "T" for deception, but is not ever called in a JV girls league.

Fixed.

Still can happen on fast breaks as the other players come rushing in from everywhere right after you make the call. One of the obvious things an official tries to avoid, but in trying to keep track of the shooter's number so the wrong person doesn't go to the line, looking back at he scene of the foul to make sure of the fouler and you see many jersies with similar [ let's say body characteristics ], you can have the wrong number or have to ask partners for help. Sometimes you have to go to the table and have them help you ought since they are part of the officiating team and are supposed to be impartial. On a rare occasion when all else fails and nobody knows, you will ask the players and they will tell you. Even give their teammate up as they don't want the foul applied to them. Without the monitor available like in TV games, if there is still nothing, it gets reported as a team foul for the 1 & 1 bonus purpose and nobody gets the direct foul. But that is very very rare.

Forde was interviewed this week and said it was a good old boy network and the selection of these officials is not always based on ability. He said one of the refs in the Elite 8 was one of the worst he's seen in the NCAA. Interesting stuff right there.

Everybody always has an opinion of the officials so it really doesn't matter what Forde thinks.....he may be right but he may be wrong. They have observors at each NCAA site and they are grading the officials in each game and they suggest to the Basketball committee & the head of NCAA officials who they feel should move on. Of course there is politics involved...there is politics involved in everything we do. You don't think the McDonald's AA teams that played last week are all do strictly based on merit do you? But most all those guys who made it round 4 & 5 [ Regionals ] were among the 36 best in the country and can handle the big games. Most all would have been in conference tourney semi's & finals plus hand numerous TV games over the years.

every other aspect of society is a good old boy network. there's no reason to think college officials are any different.

The fix was in (at least partially) last night, but Kentucky was just too good. I was pulling for Kansas, but it seemed clear the refs were doing everything in their power to get kansas back in the game at the start of the 2nd half.
