Football Program trending up

You really cannot rate a PK without factoring in performance under pressure. When we needed clutch FGs this season, we did not get them.

Apart from Plack/Swank (and they were superlative), our kicking game under Grobe has been woeful.

Apparently everyone is remembering Newman having a better year than myself. So here are his stats:

So he ended the year hitting 17-of-22 FGs (77.7%) and went 39-41 on XPs (95.1%). Not bad, in fact that's a pretty good year.

However is his last five games he went 3 of 7, including two misses inside 40 yards. I guess that's why I'm so down on him.

That being said he's done more than enough to keep his starting PK spot next season. As others have said, hopefully someone can step up and take the kickoff duties so he can concentrate on returning to his early season form.

Didn't we miss an extra against the 'Cuse?

What about the 47 yarder in the bowl game?

We all know about the Clemson kick.

What else are you referring to?

And what sense does it make to throw out Swank and Plack and then call the kicking game terrible? That's like saying apart from Pippen and Jordan, the Bulls went years without any stars on their team...

Newman's a very good kicker. He was about 50 lines down the list of why we didn't fare better this year.

I wonder if some of the low kicks were due to the snap and hold?

He missed a pretty important 3Q kick against ND in addition to the CU miss.

In fairness and on reflection, JN has been pretty solid, with a few misses this year and last that just really stand out. There is no doubt he has worked hard and improved a ton over his career.

Fair point re: dropping Swank and Plack from the evaluation, but the drop off b/w those two and the rest is big. I really thought after the 2003(?) game at UNC that we would make PK recruiting a top priority. If I am right, a lot of FB kickers are not on scholarship, whereas our guys are, so it's fair to expect a lot of productivity at that position.

Lots of improvement from 2010 to 2011 starting with the record as well as productivity. Tanner Price as a 19 year old 2nd yr starter improved from 7 TD's and 1,350 yds to over 3,000 yds and 20 touchdowns. Look for same level of improvement into his JR season as I look to that entire class to take the leadership reigns.

Likely JR starters : Nikita Whitlock, Zach Thompson, Kris Redding, Mike Olson, Justin Jackson, Duran Lowe and Danny Mack w/ sophs Allen and Noel joining in.

On the other side: Price, Harris, Campanaro, Chase, w/ 1 sr OL and a slew of sophs/ Rs Fr.Kick game should be solid.

Sr leaders from among Ehrmann, Bohanon, Garrick, Betros, Kenny and Haynes.

The schedule is considerably easier but our offensive line really was bad this year so why does losing a bunch of gray beard seniors translate into a better offense for 2012?

Tanner Price was really bad the last few games when the competition stepped up and at Nashville his deeper passes looked like he was hitting at the receivers feet. We also lost six out of eight when the competition stepped up. We have lost Chris Givens who was our go to guy and have not had a capable top notch tight end in a few years. Josh Harris is an enigma.

I see we can beat Liberty, Army, Duke, will definitely lose to Clemson, Notre Dame, Florida State, North Carolina and Virginia Tech. We have chances to beat Boston College, Maryland, NC State and maybe Vanderbilt. But with all that I see us going 3-5 in the ACC and 2-2 out of conference

I see the 4 win predictions have started out of the group who will be bitching up a storm about how much we suck when we go 7-5 next year.

I cannot accept that Wake football is trending upward until we do a much better job recruiting. In another thread I point out that over the years from 2009-2011 UNC recruited 19 4* players and 3 5*s---over the same period Clemson recruited 16 4*s and 3 5*s. Wake on the other hand recruited none of either, not one!

Now I am skeptical about the ratings system; but watching a number of bowl games has caused me to accept the hard reality that we simply do not have enough exceptional players to contend for the league championship consistently. In one sense this makes me more appreciative of what our staff has accomplished. On the other hand, it forces the conviction that we will not see substantial improvement until we recruit better players. PERIOD.

We may recruit an exceptional player here and there who flies under the radar or who has a ceiling that is higher than anyone knew. However, we are beginning at such a deficit talent wise that we have almost no hope of defeating the better schools in our conference on a regular basis.

He misses the kick and Pendergrass fumbles inside the 20 and we end up 6-6 instead of 7-5 with a win over Notre Dame.

After Newman's FG miss against ND they ran the clock out. We needed a TD there, I thought going for the end zone on third and long was a stupid decision. Should have been thinking two down strategy there to get us into the end zone.

Newman also hit the fourth quarter FG against Syracuse to put us up 15 from 40something yards. That atoned for the missed XP.

Newman generally kicks off to about the 10, which isn't terrible, but he has no hang time, and the combination of that plus our shitty special teams tackling meant the return generally made it past the 30. Besides a general FG consistency within 35 yards, I was really unhappy with Jimmy Newman this year. Wulfeck was punting pretty well in the last 2 or 3 games, though.

Your right about our kicking this year. I just don't think we had a better answer standing on the sidelines this season. I think our Aussie punter can be very, very good once he gets his technique down. He's got a really strong leg.

When it matters Tanner Price on 4th and five is a better bet than this year's field goal team at the 28 yard line.

I really want to move Ford back to DT, he is fast and huge. 6'3 - 315,

Considered an outstanding defensive line prospect ... Had 58 tackles and 10 sacks on defense ... Named first team all-area on offense by the Palm Beach Post ... First team All-Palm Beach County selection at center ... Played for a Pahokee dynasty that won three straight state titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008 ... Rated the No. 67 defensive tackle recruit nationally by Rivals.com ... Timed at 4.9 in the 40

He is a complete waste of athleticism on the O-Line. We could find multiple 300 pounders who could block just as well.

Not a chance of that happening.

I really have a good feeling about next years team. I don't think that 8 or 9 wins is that crazy of a prediction.

It's different when it's from a completely diffferent thread.

The number of people who continue to say Newman was/is a below average or average college kicker boggle my mind.
