GAME WEEK: Wake Forest vs. Belmont Abbey (exhibition)

I assumed your hypothetical game went to OT and the entire team, aside from Hoard, transferred out between the end of regulation and the start of overtime.

Not impossible, do we win a Hoard v 5 overtime?

The last couple of years they hosted the meet the players with watching an hour of practice. Not this time around. I guess this will be a cold opening on Friday.

Wake needs to control the line of scrimmage if they want to beat Belmont Abbey. We should try to limit their explosive plays.

I know this is only an exhibition; but remember how miserably we began last season...losing to one "sure win" after another.

That was with an experienced team. Manning likely has not ruined all these new guys just yet.

Last year's narrow victory over Queens in the exhibition was brutal. Guys were subbing in almost constantly, providing no sense of flow or rhythm for the players. I get you have to tinker with lineups early on, but "over tinkering" is not one of Manning's more endearing qualities.

Oh, and we barely won last year. By two, if I recall.

Go Deacs!

That was Manning trying to acclimate the players to stupid rotations through out the regular season.

Yeah, all they did this year was a meet & greet at Hanes Mall.

Two years ago, we had the 3 games in August, a Fan Fest, and an exhibition game that the team won by like 70 points.

Was the meet and greet intended for the fans to meet the players, or for the players to meet their teammates?

A few tidbits going into Wake's first exhibition:

  • Belmont Abbey, a private D2 school in Belmont, NC with an enrollment under 1,500, finished last season with a 12-18 record, finishing in 8th place in the Conference Carolinas
  • They made a “magical” run in the Conference Carolinas Conference Tournament, making it all the way to the conference final, upsetting top-seeded King in the quarterfinals
  • They return their top player, Junior guard DeQuan Abrom, who made the Conference Carolinas First Team last year. Abrom averaged 20.2 ppg, 3.6 rpb, 2.4 apg, and 1.4 spg.
  • Belmont Abbey was picked to finish 6th in the Conference Carolinas preseason poll. They received no first place votes.
  • Belmont Abbey lost their first exhibition game at Campbell, 56-83. They shot 38% and turned the ball over 22 times against the Camels.
  • They also have a player named ThankGod Avar.
  • They are, objectively, not good.

Looking forward to a competitive game!

Thank goodness we aren’t playing Pfeiffer University who just moved out of Conferenxe Carolinas and into D3

I'll throw out the first prediction:

Wake Forest - 88
Belmont Abbey - 62
