HBO to be available w/o cable subscription in 2015

You mean like the vast majority of Wake Forest sports?

Yeah. That would fall under the umbrella.

One exception is porn. That's worth watching. Especially live porn, but you have to know where to look.

I've never even really had blips away from full HD on my Chromecast with WatchESPN. Same with HBO. Netflix can be a little slow and buffer, but is generally great also. Chromecast is outstanding.

Wait...there's dead porn?

Blackout rules are the thing keeping me from dumping. There are plenty of streaming services for pro sports, but the teams I want to watch are blacked out in this area. The day blackout rules die is the day I make the switch.

Between this and NBA on TNT, I've kept basic cable. Not ready to commit to League Pass financially.

Sorry bro, Big Cable's got us sports fans all jammed up. I don't really feel like trying to set up a streaming system where I have to search through a list of 50 Croatian soccer matches to find the LSU-Auburn game, nor do I want my whole sports watching life dependent upon the reliability of a 17yo HACKR hooking his computer up to his parents cable box in Arizona or some shit.

I still haven't heard a good solution. And borrowing your brother's WatchESPN login isn't a real replacement.

I imagine ESPN is gonna catch up to the streaming revolution and shut this option down pretty soon. They'll come up with a similar a la carte model, I would guess.

CBS announcing a $5.99 streaming service now too. Episodes available next day, and apparently a bunch of old series on there like Cheers commercial free.

When it's all done, streaming a la carte is going to cost as much as cable.

In all likelihood, yeah...but at least it'll take a while to get there. In the meantime, I could ala carte the half dozen or so channels I actually watch with regularity and save buckets of money.

I haven't really looked into cutting the cord much, but how would you watch new episodes of something like Breaking Bad, when it was on?

Steal it, or pay per episode via itunes, Amazon, etc.

You wouldn't...at least not the way it's set up now (with the notable exception of HBOGo). You'd have to wait till the next day and catch it on Hulu or iTunes. Now, if the service like CBS catches on and they offer the ability to watch shows same day as their initial run, that can change.l

I was actually thinking about this last night when I realized I was now paying $175/month for cable/internet (just jumped $20 since we're on year 2, I guess).

Since we have a roku and appleTV, I assume the costs are stand-alone internet subscription, new modem/router since our Comcast dual thing is shit and wouldn't provide good service in every room if we stuck with them, and then whatever paid subscriptions we'd want.

Do people really watch local sports via www.strikeout.co and FirstRow? A quick google search shows MLB.TV doesn't offer local games and there's no subscription for NFL games. I guess you can get your local football/baseball teams if they're on FOX or CBS?

I really want to cut, but I think I'd regret watching MY WIZ via firstrow.

I watch the non-local NFL games and RedZone via firstrow or the like, since there's no NFL subscription widely available, but as you are probably already aware Roku has channels for the NBA/MLB/NHL subscriptions. Not sure exactly what they black out. All the local NFL broadcasts are available via antenna on FOX/CBS/NBC, and add ABC to that list for NCAAF.

Re: your internet service, if your Roku and AppleTV have ethernet ports in the back (some models do, others don't) I've been using the PowerLine adapters such as these with great success to get strong service to those devices.

I also recently bought a Slingbox and will soon be hooking it up at my brother's apartment, where cable is included in rent, so hopefully that will work for some games too
