Keep Randolph as assistant!

As Randolph famously said-- Just give me the damn ball.
Manning and Randolph have a winner mentality.
They know what that is like.
Look forward to watching it play out without ugly ties or a lifeless bench full of lowf mentality.

Umm, Chill was often the most disengaged coach on the bench. Hope that changes and he's not just comfortable enjoying protected pet status by Wellman.

If so, someone forgot to keep their hand on the leash when he did his little goodbye to Jeff Bzdelick press conference. That was embarrassing.

True dat. Wellman has been simply horrible in public for a while and everybody knows it. So, OK he got to say good-bye in public to his pal. Now, shut up Ron and retire already. Thanks.

I have no problem fopr various reasons with Chill being an assistant coach under Manning. It makes sense to keep someone from the previous staff. Chill has also always been a winner. I think that he will be a winner as a coach too. He also may help us recruit in Europe.

If you were as competitive as Chill, you would probably have wanted to slit your throat after working with Bzz as well.

Is the idea that Childress is going to sit and "enjoy his protected status" a real concern among some of you? Because that seems like a pretty ridiculous notion.

What's ridiculous? He's doing that instead of going out and looking for a job working for a better coach in the case of [Redacted] or a more experienced coach in the case of Manning.

It's strange that Childress is getting comfortable behind Manning instead of positioning himself to replace him if his endgame is to be the Wake Forest head basketball coach.

Who is going to hire him to be a HC after one year as an assistant? The smart thing for him to do is stick with the job you had - and now he can watch a real coach do his thing. He can spend a couple more years here and then look for a HC job elsewhere.

Nobody is going to hire him as a HC after one year as an assistant. He could get an assistant job away from Wake and position himself to be the HC at Wake when Manning is done here.

Why does he have to leave Wake to do that?

It would be a lot easier to prove he is a good assistant/recruiter here, take a head coaching job somewhere else for a few years then return.

Regardless, the idea that he is at Wake just to draw a paycheck is a groundless fear.

Why does he have to leave Wake to do that?

Because if Manning leaves because he's forced out, his 3rd assistant isn't going to be considered for the head job.

This. Pretty much what Amaker has done. Play for the master. Sit at the side of the master. Go out in the world and prove you can do it on your own. Come back and replace the master when he retires or moves on.

Chill needs a few years working for Manning, then should move on and move up to a first assistant position, then to HC at a good mid major. Success there would position him to be back at Wake as HC with the credentials Wake would want in anyone hired to be BB HC.

Danny Manning is not Coach K.

Because if Manning leaves because he's forced out, his 3rd assistant isn't going to be considered for the head job.

But if Manning leaves because he's taking a bigger job or retires, and Chill's worked his way up the ranks, he would be the right-hand man and loyal alum who could take over.

He obviously loves Wake and wants to be here, his son is in HS in the area - it makes all the sense in the world for him to stay and be an assistant. Now, if we're talking about him turning down HC jobs in a couple of years because he doesn't want to leave, that's a different story.

I love how Ph is all over Chill's psychology. Did you sit him down for a talk on the couch recently?

I have no idea about his psychology. I'm just guessing. I do know that if he wants to be the head coach at Wake, he's not in the best position to do it by being an assistant to an inexperienced coach. So why Wake instead of somewhere else? Simple answer.

He'd be the loyal alum regardless and he'll be the easy choice if he moves up the ranks. Is that move going to be easier at Wake or elsewhere under a more experienced coach? He's basically choosing the same route Rusty did under Dino. Did that work out for Rusty?

If Rusty had stayed at D-III Greensboro College (2004-05) and moved up to a low-major job with a good track record of success maybe a tournament appearance or two over 10 years as a head coach, he would have been a top choice to come home and replace Bz.

Instead, he left Greensboro College and eventually made his way to back to MSD and now he's looking for a job.
