After a nine day break, the Deacs look to shake off the exam rust this Monday versus the Delaware State Hornets. The last time WF MBB faced DSU was in Steve Forbes' debut game at WF HC on November 25, 2020. The Deacs won by SIXTY 111-51 (Tariq Ingraham played a perfect game in his Deacon debut: 18 minutes, 19 points, 7 for 7 FGs, 5 for 5 from the line, 5 boards -- Ingraham scored a total of three points for the rest of his WF career, got COVID and transferred to Rider - he currently leads the Broncs in rpg with 7); unfortunately, the entire team got COVID after that 2020 game (Ingraham had a particularly rough time with the Rona), allegedly from the Hornets, and WF ended up only playing one game over the 30+ days after the DSU opener.

Here is a look at the 2023-4 DSU Hornets:

This season: 6-7 #295: While the Hornets' record and rating is poor, this is DSU's best KP rating this late in a season since 2015. Last year, DSU won six games all season; so, six wins by mid-December is an achievement, but the wins have come against 2 non-D1 teams, and four teams rated #321 or below. DSU has played one game against a top 100 team, #35 Texas, and got smoked 86-59. Last time out, DSU just missed upsetting #151 Longwood losing 62-61.

The Hornets analytics:

Offense
Adj E: 94.9 #333
E FG%: 45.3% #318
TO% 22% #347
3 FG%: 30% #292
2 FG%: 46% #298

Defense:

Adj E: 105.4 #189
E FG%: 54% #303
TO%: 23% #23
3 FG%: 39% #350
2 FG%: 50% #183

The Hornets rarely shoot 3s (#361 in 3PA/FGA), and they play slow on offense (#269 in length of offensive possessions). On defense, DSU has massively improved. They turnover opponents at a very high rate, while also keeping teams off the offensive glass. DSU has good size for a mid-major (#82 in height)

The Roster:

Against Longwood, the Hornets started:

6-2 Sr. Martaz Robinson: 4 years starter, all MEAC in 2023, leads in scoring (18 ppg) and rebs (6 per game), 44% from three
6-2 Fr. Deywilk Tavarez: Worked his way into the starting lineup; 3rd in scoring (10 ppg) and 1st in assists (4 ppg) and TOs (4 ppg) 33% from three
6-6 So. Jevin Muniz: talented, scored 21 points against national champ UCONN last year; 21 against Texas this year; 33% from three
6-10 Jr. Alston Andrews: Illinois State transfer; has never attempted a three in 41 career games; 2nd on team in boards
6-11 Sr. Ray Somerville: started at Cal Bakersfield; averages only 17 mpg; has never attempted a three; 48% FG; 50% FTs

The bench:

6-1 Jr. Kyrie Staten: missed three games; 7 ppg; 22% from three;
6-8 Jr. Wesley Oba: from England; 7 ppg 6 rpg 67% FGs

The Projections:

KP: WF 81 DSU 62
Torivk: WF 83 DSU 64

While this game won't help WF's NCAAT candidacy, this DSU team is better than expected (started the season at #329; now up to #295), and they actually have a chance to make some noise in the MEAC. DSU is rated higher than either NJIT and Charleston Southern, and WF struggled early against both those squads. In WF's three home games against out-manned opponents, WF sputtered early:
  • Down 36-15 with 7:04 left in the 1H against #292 Elon
  • Down 30-20 with 3:08 left in the 1H against #343 Chuck South
  • Up 29-27 with 4:45 left in the 1H against #343 NJIT
Got to think that WF is overdue to take it to an opponent from the opening tip. That said, DSU has size and plays solid D. Deacs need to avoid TOs on offense, force them on defense and push tempo, as DSU wants to make this game a slog; WF wants to ramp up the pace. IF WF had played better at home against weak opponents, I would be inclined to recommend WF, but this Delaware State team is not easy to blow out. If the line is WF -20 or higher, I will pass. If it opens 19 or lower, I will play the Deacs as WF is better than it has played to date with Reid getting acclimated and WF young guards finding their legs.

Deacs will be facing the MEAC POW and ROW on Monday:

The anticipation on these boards for this game is palpable.

It’s gonna be electric!

I believe we lost to Delaware State during the Manning years.

Yes this is the rubber match for our all time series. They beat us 72-65 and then we beat them 111-51. Cannot wait to see the highly anticipated game 3. Long time coming.

What I remember about the Delaware State loss was that they had a very large player that gave us a specific matchup nightmare. It was early in the Manning era, so people were still hopeful.

November 28, 2014:

Delaware State is horrible. Slightly worse than Mount St. Mary's but slightly better than Nicholls apparently.

Wake will roll in this one. I hope we keep them under 50. Through six games (against albeit some bad competition), Wake is the top defensive rebounding team in the nation allowing only 19.4% of opponent's shots to be rebounded.

OOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPPPPSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coach Danny Manning of Wake Forest, who is in his first season, said his team didn't look past the Hornets, who were picked in the MEAC preseason poll to finish fifth.

"We're not at that point," Manning said. "We have to step out on the court and be successful on every possession. Tonight, there were far too many possessions where we didn't do that."

At the end of the day, successful possessions are way more important than paint touches, but the two aren't mutually exclusive-
Danny Manning
