Men's Golf 2017 - 18

What are we even arguing about? We finished 1st, 1st, 6th, 3rd and 5th this fall. The 5th was the final event without our best player. A borderline top 5 player was hurt most of the fall (Detmer) and another potential Top 5 who is redshirting (Sterbinsky).

Gillam is a freshman, so bringing him along slowly with exposure in the fall isnt a bad move. Not to mention that final tournament doesnt really amount to much of anything in the grand scheme of things.

This is a really dumb argument

Without looking at stats, those are likely similar to the past few years - the beef is that we haven't won an ACC tourney or made it to match play in NCAAs in forever.

Pretty sure we are all aware of that by now

Right, and some of us are saying that Haas' favoritism and lineup planning likely had an effect on poor postseason results over the years. Hope this is the year we finally buck the trend.

Yea, I'm going to disagree with that assessment. And certainly going to disagree that playing Gillam as an individual was either a) a mistake, or b) reflective of some larger issue.

Fair enough, and I can't comment on this particular situation, but I know with certainty it has strained relationships and caused dissension on the team in previous years. From what you, and others more connected to the program have said, perhaps that is no longer a problem.

Generally, to the extent WF "fans" pay attention to golf results at all, they follow two/three tournaments:

- The ACC
- The NCAA Regionals and Finals

Beyond that, Bud and others are generally ignorant of how the golf team is recruiting and performing. As a result of the ACC tournament championship drought (and to a lesser extent the recent NCAA disappointments), the few fans that comment on men's golf will limit their comments to the annual "Haas is not Jesse Haddock" or Haas is not getting it done after another 5th place ACC tourney finish. The fact is that, 30+ years ago, when WF was the nation's best golf program by miles, there were less than a handful of schools that put any effort or money into their golf program. Now, there are a ton of schools that max out the golf scholarship allotment and there are ton of schools with their own PGA level golf courses - on or next to campus. WF has no university golf course. WF has an affiliation with Old Town, which is nice, but it's not the same as the school having its own course.

Arnie spear-headed an effort to build WF its own golf course in the late 80s and early 90s, but it never gained the traction needed to move beyond the planning stage. WF has nice on campus practice facilities and WF still recruits on the highest levels, but a lot of schools now also recruit on the highest levels. Also, winning any one particular tournament is often incredibly flukey. WF could win three ACC titles in a row or could go another 20 years without a title. The best overall golfer and/or the best overall golf team does not win every week. The sport doesn't work that way, unless every other team is completely over-matched as was the case in the 70s and 80s.
