It's amazing that the people on these boards have been educated at a top notch institution like wake.

The Shia and the Sunni are at war and always have been since the great schism. US involvement in the region has been necessary due to the integral link petroleum plays in the modern economy. If we have to be friendly with an oppressive regime (which both the Iranian and Saudi regimes are) I will take the one which has shown a willingness to be an economic partner.

Iran and Saudi Arabia aren't really in the same ballpark when it comes to oppression of their population. In fact, Shia is a far more liberal and less "fundamentalist" form of Islam at it's core.

I'm sure that academic assessment would really resonate with the average man in either country (sarcasm). As for women, the women in Iran are better off than the women in Saudi but there are no awards for being the tallest midget.
