New coaching search thread

I mean, it's basically impossible for the info that Les has posted to not to trickle onto this board.

If we are getting the Thad Matta who beat Skip for Oden and Conley and took tOSU to the NC game -- absolutely.

That was 14+ years ago. He hasn't coached basketball for three seasons. His last two years at tOSU were disappointing in performance and in recruiting; tOSU was struggling. Maybe Matta's physical aliments are resolved, and he is ready to get after it with a vengeance -- then of course Matta is a great candidate, but unless someone here knows Matta personally, how can you be certain about Matta's current ability to lead.

This excerpt is from an article about Matta when tOSU let him go:

Thad Matta has been fired by Ohio State, he and Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith announced at a Monday news conference.

Matta, 49, has struggled with back and foot issues for several years after surgery to help his back problems in 2007 resulted in a permanent disability in his right foot.
On top of that, all five players from Matta's highly touted 2015 recruiting class have left the team.

****

When asked if he could get back into coaching, Matta said he was working first and foremost on getting healthy, but did add, "never say never."

Given that background, fair to question whether Matta is the best choice for WF.

Coaching basketball requires a lot of physical effort and stamina on multiple fronts. Recruiting, gym teaching and in game coaching. If Thad Matta feels he is up to the physical demands, his physician concurs and Currie and his team vetting agree, then he's the best guy on the list.

So we're not even talking to Beilein? Or do we think it was broached and no way we could get to an agreement?

Because, if we just chose to not even talk to him, then this whole process is already a lost cause.

Yes, fine but probably underwhelming right? We are the only open P6 job for the ENTIRE CYCLE. We should be able to have our pick of the litter.

Of course it would be underwhelming, but not inexplicable.

Here is your shut the fuck up moment for the Forbes-JUCO player idiots:

Forbes was the top recruiter of high school players for Gillispie at Texas A&M, Pearl at Tennessee, and Gregg Marshall at Wichita State. He's been scouting high school players since Kevin Garnett played at ABCD Camp in the early 90s.

His health is good

It would have been malpractice not to have spoken with Beilein.

I think Chaundee's leaving was a major factor for JB. We would have been pretty good with him. Without Chaundee, it will likely be a long season. That would make recruiting more difficult. Not sure that would interest a 67 yo.

The Beilein and Beilein package deal may have been a deal breaker.

Not to mention the fact, both against Forbes as well as any other peaking mid-major coach, that utilizes JuCos: It's a lazy argument.
It's the one, if not THE, best tools to turnaround/build a MID-Major. These guys don't usually use JuCos once they take Power 5 jobs.
And everyone knows they don't. It's a stupid claim to base a "knock" on.

the nepotism thing is tough to swallow but when you throw in the fact that Patrick Beilien has had some pretty significant personal problems then it is really a big problem. I'd love to get Beilein- his is my number one guy, but if it is a package deal, then I totally get why he is not a candidate.

There is zero evidence to support anything like this. We'd be lucky to get Beilein but I doubt he had interest period in us. We are a small market program coming off a decade of unwiped ass. Aside from some poorly chosen words, Beilein is coming from a huge Big 10 school with success and an NBA gig that is still paying him. IF Beilein still wants to coach he will have his chance and it will be a sweet gig in a nice place to live with a big fan base and a legit shot at a final four in 2-3 years.

To think freaking Chaundee Brown is the difference between Beilein coming to Wake or not is delusional.

People on here are delusional. If Matta is an option, cool. Please no Shaka. There are lot's of good candidates. Forbes will be a great coach for a long time. Not sure there is serious interest from either side, though.
