Obama Vetting Nevada Gov. Sandoval (R) for SCOTUS

Gotta be a smokescreen. Why would Obama nominate a Republican? Who exactly would that please?

Forces the GOP to concede that they would hold a hearing/vote. Also, based on google, dude is pretty moderate and pro-choice.

From what I read about the guy on wiki, he seems like he would be a pretty good choice....both politically & on qualifications. Sounds like the kind of person we need more of on the court.

Obama is playing chess, and he puts the Republican in check if this is true.

Kind of doubt he would accept. The senate would still kill the nomination and then he would be done in Republican politics.

The GOP isn't going to concede that.

Of course not, but they're going to look like assholes when they don't even meet with him. Obama has McConnell by the short and curlies. Once again.

ETA: It's the President's duty to nominate SC justices. It's their job to confirm or reject the nominee. Not doing your job isn't conceding.

Obama should nominate the person he wants, and not a person who MIGHT get a vote from the Senate. In January, Hillary will be president and the Senate will be back in democratic hands. No need to compromise on the biggest choice in a generation.

Agreed, makes less sense from Sandoval's perspective than Obama's. Unless Sandoval immediately says no way no how, he's dead to the GOP. Just turns into Huntsman-zero chance for VP in 2016, GOP SCOTUS or AG in 2017, or POTUS in 2020. Additionally, can still get dumped as a nominee if Dems win in November. He's totally hosed. Obama must think Sandoval's the best possible 2016 GOP VP. Just like hugging Christie and Haley.

Makes sense for Sandoval if he is done with the GOP ala Charlie Crist. For e the GOP to hold a hearing or vote and either get confirmed or not. GOP will be slammed in the election and he can join the Dems.

Crist isn't exactly a great model for him to follow. Got crushed by Rubio in the primaries, and ran as an independent and got branded as a turncoat, then lost again to Rubio in the general. He then tried to become a Democrat, and was branded as being willing to believe anything to get elected. He wasn't able to retain any of his previous Republican constituency, and wasn't able to convince Democrats he was truly one of them. He then proceeded to get mauled by an unpopular incumbent Republican governor, and is now enjoying his retirement from politics.

Care to bet on the Senate flipping?

Great move by Obama if he is the nominee. Everyone knows Obama isn't going to nominate a pro-life judge, so not surprised to see that the potential nominee is Pro-Choice. Sandoval seems pretty moderate. This puts the Pubs in a tight spot.

Meet Brian Sandoval, Nevada’s Party Pooper

Sandoval spent part of the 2000s as a federal judge, a lifetime appointment he discarded to run for governor. Those close to him say that he still acts like he wears the robe—loyalists, of whom Sandoval has many, consistently describe him as disciplined, dedicated, devoted. By all accounts, he loves his job, famously turning down a lucrative offer to challenge (and likely beat) Harry Reid for the U.S. Senate. “Different governors have different motivations,” Sandoval said, sitting up. “I’m not looking for a national profile. I’m focused on my job.”

But the prevailing irony, maybe, runs deeper. Sandoval left a lifetime appointment on the bench, presumably swept up in dreams of turning around the state and receiving a hero’s welcome. The problem appears to be that he succeeded, resurrecting good Republican governance on the state level. The Republican primary has killed off almost all of its GOP governors, with the last one standing, John Kasich, perhaps likely soon to fall. Like the others, Sandoval must be wondering if he can turn his state around, or he can run for president. But he can’t do both. "I don't agree," he said when presented with the notion, for the first time slightly annoyed. "It's a big, fat hypothetical."

Interesting.

If he doesn't speak up immediately, Sandoval must really want to be a Justice and knows there's no chance as a 'Pub (pro-choice, Obamacare, marriage equality). Doesn't strike me as a Crist or Arlen Specter. Not even a Scott Brown (ran in NH after losing in MA, endorsed Trump). Born again back bench Senator Cruz will be extremely pissed that the first Latino GOP SC nominee graduated from Nevada and Ohio State. Added bonus, Brian can't swing and field as well as his hermano Panda, but he's signigicantly less porky. Trump will sue over Brian's birth certificate.
