Official 2021 NBA Thread - Preseason (and WNBA Finals talk)

Jason Conception is fantastic. His stuff on NBA All Caps is brilliant.

The Athletic has a good interview with Monte Williams, Phoenix Sun's HC. Lots of comments about CP3, and TD. One in particular: they like to hoop. Lots of guys play basketball. They like to hoop. I read that like Boogie's "football players play football."

oh professional basketball players like to play basketball

Pretty Damning stuff from Nerlens Noel on Rich Paul

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/knicks-c-nerlens-noel-sues-agent-rich-paul-nba-232914914.html

At that point, Noel claims Paul "began to lose interest" in him as a client. He hit unrestricted agency in 2018 and claims neither Paul nor anyone at his agency Klutch Sports presented any offers or strategies.

Instead of signing a max contract, Noel ended up signing a league minimum deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder for two years and $3.75 million. Even that contract allegedly didn't come from Paul, as Noel says he was personally recruited by then-Thunder stars Russell Westbrook and Paul George.

MIAMI, FLORIDA - MARCH 11: Sports agent Rich Paul looks on after the game between the Miami Heat and the Charlotte Hornets at American Airlines Arena on March 11, 2020 in Miami, Florida. The NBA announced tonight the season has been suspended after a Utah Jazz player preliminary tested positive for the coronavirus. After a solid season as a bench player for the Thunder, Noel opted out of his contract in 2019 and once again hit free agency ... where he says he received no offers. Another league minimum contract with the Thunder would follow, but Noel says he later learned from Brett Brown, his former coach with the Philadelphia 76ers, that the Sixers attempted to contact Paul about signing Noel only to not have any of their calls taken or returned. Noel claims he learned of other teams encountering the same reception.

Noel says he considered dropping Paul as his agent in 2020, but was convinced to stay by Klutch agent Lucas Newton, whom Noel claims told him that the Thunder were planning to offer a three-year deal worth $7-10 million per year. No such offer came, and Noel says he again heard of other teams, this time the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Clippers, not having any calls returned by Paul.

Sadly for Sonya’s many aspiring suitors, who made her a trending topic on Instagram on Monday, Dell alleges that Sonya is already living with another man.

She says that while she admits to a new relationship that began after they legally separated in March of 2020, that she’s not living with anyone but has been forced from her former marital home by Dell, per TMZ.

Sonya also alleges that Dell cheated on her repeatedly during their 33-year marriage while he played in Charlotte, Toronto, Milwaukee, Cleveland and Utah during his 16-year NBA career. Sonya alleges that Dell’s cheating was an open secret among their family and close friends.

March 2020 was either a really good or really bad time to start a new relationship.

Based on that article, it seems like there may be some receipts but not enough. I don’t know how much evidence Noel’s side would have that some teams tried to reach out but their calls weren’t returned. And I don’t know if team execs are going to stick their necks out for Noel against Rich Paul.

Well you have to assume Rich Paul’s influence is a couple years away from tanking

Only if you assume Paul's influence is connected to Lebron's influence and that Lebron's influence is a couple years away from tanking and that Bronny doesn't make it into the league.

ESPN removed Rachel Nichols from all NBA programming and cancelled The Jump.

Well alot of his non-lebron influence has lost some weight recently re: Ben Simmons, John Wall, etc. AD and Draymond are the only top tier guys left, although he's got a couple nice young guys on the roster like Garland/Bridges. But yes, I can see Lebron's influence staying on well after his career is up as people would still want to be near his fame/wealth. But there have been reports out there for years about Paul fucking up majorly on a few clients and costing them money.

The 30 for 30 podcast about Nipsey Hussle is a pretty good listen and had a lot of interviews with NBA players for anyone interested.

I forgot too. He played in China the whole season then joined the playoff roster. He played 31 minutes and didn’t score a point.

Yeah that's cute and has almost nothing to do with Ray Allen doing what he does - make shots, often difficult ones.

It has everything to do with Gregg Popovich being so rigid that he "did what we did all season" and left Boris Diaw and Kawhi in the game as his 2 "rebounders." That meant he took Duncan out of the game, when the 1 thing they needed was the ball - a defensive rebound. The argument is the Spurs needed to "switch everything" or whatever - it was a terrible, just awful coaching decision, and was obvious at the time ("why is Duncan sitting down, it is ALMOST over...OMG").

That was a moment for Pop to realize he maybe had 1 too many glasses of wine the night before and BASED ON GAME FLOW and that specific situation - leave the GOAT at PF in the game, get the rebound instead of Kawhi allowing D-Wade to jump over him to get the board (what a great situation that Kawhi is 1 of your 2 guys "to get the rebound" and a guard out-boards him by simply jumping over his back)...

...and then yes, all this becomes true - Lebron then becomes Lebron < Duncan, period, end of discussion. Etc.

All that said, congrats to Pop (and Spur Keldon Johnson) for getting the gold medal despite all sorts of challenges, and to Aussies Patty Mills and new Spur, Jock Londale, for getting a bronze.
