Official Hoops Coaching Search Thread - Welcome Danny Manning!!!

Over/Under: 17,000 posts before the next Wake coach is officially announced

I'm not sure our fans ever were all that rational-minded, but I agree, most now sound somewhere between PTSD and battered spouse syndrome.

It wouldn't be a good hire from the outset, but we don't know if he would be a bad coach or not. There's no indication that he is a bad coach. There's also no real indication of what kind of coach he would be.

This would be an instance of pretty bad hire, like you said, but unknown on whether or not it would be a good fit and the coach would succeed.

Compare that with the last search four years ago where it was an atrocious hire, the coach was clearly not good and it was clearly not a good fit.

I think Manning would have potential for success, but that we have no idea where the floor is. Bottom line, we should get someone who is better known where we have a better chance of identifying floors and ceilings. Manning is a total unknown.

Stupid post.

Wellman screwed up the past 4 years, and the lunatic fringe portion of our fanbase has made it worse. We are paying the price for both sides of this mess now.

just curious as to how the lunatic fringe made it worse? are the lunatic fringe you are referring to the ones that like wellman wanted to give bz more time?

if the next coach is not a big enough name/talent/near sure thing you risk losing the recruiting honeymoon period (with only one scholarship available it's likely anyway).

if that happens you also risk losing the "wake will" honeymoon period.

i wish i could be talked off the ledge.

We also need a hell of a hire to try to mitigate the damage done in the last 4 years as quickly as possible, and unfortunately, Danny Manning will not do that. He MAY pan out, sure, but no one is going to be excited; no one is going to send tons of money to the Deacon Club; season ticket sales aren't going to spike.

Wake needs all of those things after the damage Bz and Wellman have done to the program for the last 4 years.

Manning has potential, but with only 2 full seasons under his belt, it's a huge risk. Just like Bzz. Wake doesn't need to take another huge risk. We shouldn't have to, not if schools like Virginia Tech can get Buzz Williams.

This is why people are freaking out. We shouldn't have to stoop to these levels.

We are supposed to be awesome, we have NBA studs, we are in the ACC. Mid-major coaches aren't supposed to turn us down. Half of us are still in denial. Hopefully they are right. We are having our come to jesus moment and IT SUCKS.

Thanks a lot Ronald.

Tomorrow. Shaka, the Deacon, and a big pile of money in DC. Relax.

Yet still none of this addresses why VPI was able to get Buzz Williams. Wake is undeniably a better program historically, a better program recently (which is pretty unbelievable), a better current program with the guys coming back, and has a considerably higher ceiling.

Seems like Wellman is in a no-win situation if he doesn't get Shaka or Marshall, if I'm reading the board correctly the past week.

Either it's a "retread" where we know the floor/ceiling, or it's not a home run, and we don't know the floor/ceiling.

We were having really good, nuanced discussions about this stuff up until Bz got fired (see the Mike White et al thread). But now it seems like our expectations have been on such a roller coaster that everyone has lost perspective, and it's all or nothing.

Disagree. I think his post is absolutely spot on.

Me too.

What I do not understand is how the athletic department could allow the notion of a much bigger hire to stay out there so long if they knew that was not going to happen. There are ways to dampen rumors without giving away the news. By permitting the noise to continue about Shaka and others, Manning (if he is the hire) has been set up for a cool reception by many. That I do not understand.

Yeah this has definitely happened to some extent. I also think there's a big difference between hiring Shaka and Marshall and then hiring Danny Manning.
