Official Russian Election Interference Thread

Soon he will be food for worms

"Meanwhile, McCain continued receiving the beatings that would forever leave him incapable of lifting his arms over his head. "He kept enduring torture because he refused to leave his band of brothers behind.

Do you have that kind of character? If you booed McCain at last week’s rally, don’t bother answering. Someone has obviously failed you in your life; you probably need to spend some time figuring out who that was. And if you still go to church, you may also want to pray for all those around you who put tribal politics ahead of basic humanity.

Then maybe you should drive home and tell your children the story of John McCain’s sacrifice. If you can teach your children that lesson of heroism, there’s a chance they might grow up to have more character than the president you now praise."

And perhaps there just may be hope for our country."

Manafort Had $60 Million Relationship With a Russian Oligarch

by Aggelos Petropoulos and Richard EngelOct 13 2017, 6:39 pm ET
LONDON — Paul Manafort, a former campaign manager for President Donald Trump, has much stronger financial ties to a Russian oligarch than have been previously reported.

An NBC News investigation reveals that $26 million changed hands in the form of a loan between a company linked to Manafort and the oligarch, Oleg Deripaska, a billionaire with close ties to the Kremlin.

The loan brings the total of their known business dealings to around $60 million over the past decade, according to financial documents filed in Cyprus and the Cayman Islands.

This is a long but insightful read. Many good nuggets in here.

FBI document cache sheds light on inner workings of Russia’s U.S. news (and propaganda) network

"Yahoo News has independently verified the authenticity of some of the Sputnik emails Feinberg gave to the Justice Department. The messages depict a company that stuck closely to the Kremlin’s party line.

The documents also suggest Sputnik journalists had relationships with hackers linked to Russian intelligence and key American allies of Donald Trump. The information Fionda sent to the Justice Department highlighted a tweet in which one of Sputnik’s radio hosts boasted about his role in connecting Guccifer 2.0, the hacker behind the Democratic National Committee leaks, to Roger Stone, an early architect of Trump’s campaign. On April 30, Feinberg emailed Martinichev about a party he attended that was sponsored by the conservative blog Gateway Pundit. Feinberg said he stepped out for a cigarette and encountered Michael Flynn Jr., the son of Trump’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn."

...

The emails Feinberg provided to the Justice Department show how Sputnik echoed the Kremlin’s message. In one instance, Feinberg’s bosses urged him to come up with stories deflecting blame for the chemical-weapons attack on Syrian civilians last spring away from Russia’s Syrian ally, President Bashar Assad. Feinberg told Yahoo News that he quit earlier this year over pressure to advance a conspiracy theory, heavily promoted by Fox News commentator Sean Hannity, about the death of a young staffer at the Democratic National Committee.

Here's a good thread on the pace and rhythm of the Russia investigation.

Russian trolls were reportedly ordered to watch “House of Cards”

“We had a goal to set up the Americans against their own government. To cause unrest, cause discontent, [and] lower [President] Obama’s rating,”
“At first we were forced to watch the House of Cards in English,” said Maksim in the interview. It was part of a documented “strategy” in the English language department to fully understand how the American political system works. “It was necessary to know all the main problems of the United States of America. Tax problems, the problem of gays, sexual minorities, weapons,” he said.

“You were given a list of media that you had to monitor and comment on–New York Times, Washington Post,” he added. The trolls were required to look through thousands of comments on the publications’ articles. “It was necessary to look through all this and understand the general trend, what people were writing about, what they are arguing about,” he said. “And then get into the dispute yourself to kindle it, try to rock the boat.”

The trolls were even measured by “how much you got ‘likes.’ The comment was supposed to provoke a discussion.”

Maksim also revealed two major themes the trolls were to write about in their posts: homosexuals and guns: “When it was gays, we almost always had to bring out the religious themes. Americans are very religious, especially those [who post] on news sites and write comments. You had to write that sodomy is a sin. That could always get you a couple of dozen ‘likes.'”MG

How do we know trolls coming out and revealing their operation isn't a part of the same plan to divide Americans?

Provoke conservatives with lies. Provoke liberals with truth.

Mueller has interviewed the cybersecurity expert who described being 'recruited to collude with the Russians'

The former national security adviser Michael Flynn.
A cybersecurity researcher who described being recruited to vet hacked Hillary Clinton emails last year by a GOP operative tied to President Donald Trump's campaign team has been interviewed by the FBI's special counsel, Robert Mueller, Business Insider has learned.

Mueller interviewed Matt Tait, a former information-security specialist at Britain's Government Communications Headquarters who tweets as @pwnallthethings, several weeks ago, said a source familiar with the matter.

The interview was part of a broader effort by Mueller to examine the relationship between the longtime GOP operative, Peter Smith, and the former national security adviser Michael Flynn and whether Flynn played any role in seeking out the stolen emails during the election. Smith killed himself in May after talking to The Wall Street Journal about his experience.

The House Intelligence Committee has also interviewed Tait in its investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election, CNN reported.

Tait declined to comment. A spokesman for Mueller's office also declined to comment.

Mueller interviewed Tait months after Tait published a first-person account of his interactions with Smith on the national-security blog Lawfare.

In a piece titled "The Time I Got Recruited to Collude with the Russians," Tait recalled how Smith had approached him to help verify the authenticity of emails he said were given to him by dark-web hackers.
