Official Trump Swamp Thread: Still Corrupt as Fuck

I would like to think that some of that talk is designed to placate some Republicans so that they will maybe move the transition along/not burn everything to the ground on their way out. Also, there are major national problems that require immediate attention. I would hope that they will circle back around on the Trump administration after the country isn't an active garbage fire.

House Democrats impeached Trump and lost seats. Senate Republicans didn’t convict and will likely retain control.

There’s no electoral reward for doing the right thing and no consequences for protecting corruption. It’s maddeningly frustrating.

Part of why Republicans engaged in nakedly partisan “investigations” is to insulate themselves somewhat from legitimate ones.

Definitely. False equivalency helps them maintain their moral superiority.

I hope this is true. You can't touch Trump without sullying yourself. As a country, we need to move on.

well, i fully expect this abortion of a president to try to pardon himself and a number of people currently in his administration and family. so i think they will just get out of the way for NY AG to do the dirty work so it won't be seen as a partisan hit, such as the likes that Trump does.

i literally cannot wait for Trump to move on as he has made the US a laughing stock world wide. he goes down as the most socialist president in US history with his bailouts to farmers, coal, allowing fraudulent companies to prey on business support...his entire four years have been a disaster in most people's eyes.

I can't stand Trump, but I also can't stand the idea of wasting thousands of hours on a bunch of show-trials and hearings that aren't going to lead to jack shit when there is so much other work to be done. It's not like Trump was some kind of mystery when Republicans nominated him or the country elected him. A giant swath of the country still loves him - in a sense regardless of what side of the isle you're on, Trump met your expectations. Let New York go after him for tax evasion and the banks go after him for his loans - we the people got what we voted for and what we deserved, it's not up to Federal courts to bail us out.

I agree with this mostly but that fucker Barr has to be reckoned with

I’d be fine letting NY deal with Trump and letting DOJ focus on everyone else including Barr and Republican in Congress with shady overseas ties.

I’d rather paint this as GOP corruption than just Trump.

Getting Trump to snitch on Republicans to save himself would be hilarious.

One problem with this is the matter of Trump’s debt and what he’d be willing to do to settle it. How do you keep a former President/presidential candidate from committing treason?

This pos is not, and should not be, above the law. His crimes deserve consequences for what they have done to America and the world.

Having said that there is bound to be holdovers in the doj that could be a problem so waiting on using the doj to investigate may be a good idea. At least the new administration will cooperate with state attorney generals and Congressional oversight investigations.

Probably a better way to make sure this doesn't happen again is to pass laws that prevent it rather than throw these guys in jail. A few simple things would prevent some of the major problems we've seen. Candidates for federal elected office must release 10 years of tax returns; Nominees for federal political appointment Must release 10 years of tax returns; Presidents, VPs and cabinet secretaries must put assets into a blind trust before entering office and for 5 years after leaving; etc. These rules would probably deter a bunch of rich assholes from running for office for financial gain, and if they did anyway, we the public would be able to review their financial ties and potential for corruption.

I'd also say Biden could accomplish a lot by going a head and declassifying piles of incriminating material from the last 4 years, that would simply embarrass and expose the GOP, and set a president for future presidents to use declassifying to embarrass their predecessors which would deter future bad behavior. He could do all of that without "politicizing" the DOJ and go a long way to preventing future Trumps.

Who, Trump? He is, in many ways, literally above the law. He can pardon himself. He can pardon others. Just on a whim. He can future-pardon himself for anything he can imagine. Sure, he's not completely above state laws or certain absolutes (although even that's arguable at this point), but all us geniuses of the public put him there. Then almost kept him there. Maybe folks needed a reminder of exactly how much power the President wields but again, he sure did get a lot of votes and guys like Lindsey Graham got re-elected, so it's not like there was some referendum issued by the voters.

Isn't that up in the air with most people leaning against him being able to do that?

And I thought pardon powers were limited to items which were under potential investigation. You can't pardon for future crimes that haven't occurred.

This is like minority report.
