Ongoing gun violence/injury thread

If the NRA truly believes, "Guns don't kill people. People kill people." They should support even more stringent background checks to keep guns out of the hands of people who are more likely to harm people.

The NRA isn't and hasn't been about the 2nd Amendment for at least half a century. It's 98% or so an industry lobbying organization. It's about the profits of gun and ammo manufacturers.

I was a member of the NRA at one point and for some reason continue to get their emails. Some of their positions are absolutely laughable.

Most of their emails get flagged as spam.

That's not a tough one at all. There's an unknown man in his daughter's bedroom. I'm not sure it matters if he reached for something or not. It's in his home. Sad, but this one is on his daughter. Can't blame the dad for wanting to keep his home safe.

exactly. so many of these tragedies involve gross misinformation in the moment that leads to grey situations.

but, if the guns weren't there, nobody would have died of gunshot. they could have died by stabbing or blunt trauma, but the time it takes to do that fatally to someone is enough time for it to be prevented one way or another.

Many firearm locks are of poor quality and just designed to comply with laws, not actually secure your weapon. Yet studies have shown for well over a decade that the presence of a (poorly) locked firearm essentially eliminates accidental shootings and dramatically reduces crimes of passion. The likely reason being the 3 seconds it takes to remove the trigger lock is 3 seconds you can reflect on what you're about to do, what those implications are, and what alternatives might exist.

Man arrested in Kansas Jewish community shootings reportedly longtime Ku Klux Klan leader

The 73-year-old man accused of going on a deadly shooting spree Sunday at Jewish facilities in Kansas has been identified as a former ‘grand dragon’ of the Carolina Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. The shootings took the lives of three people before he was arrested.
Two of those shot were at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Kansas City. The other was at the Village Shalom Retirement Center. Both are located in Overland Park, Kan., south of Kansas City.
The shootings occurred about 1 p.m. central time a day before Passover, the eight-day holiday in which Jews celebrate their freedom from slavery in Egypt.
The Kansas City Star said that the gunman fired at five people Sunday afternoon, but he missed two of his targets, who were not injured. Police said the man had not only a shotgun but also a handgun and possibly an assault weapon.

If only they had brought their guns with them to the Jewish Community Center and Retirement Center that day.

Eighteen people were shot before noon on Saturday in Chicago this weekend. Another 16 were shot after noon on Saturday. It was a busy weekend.
