Ongoing US GOP Debacle Thread: Seditious Republicans march toward authoritarianism

I found this timely from a blog I follow:

There are people who insist on holding on to resentment, often inventing situations in their minds that never happened, justifying their bad behavior, and putting the blame on others. They see themselves as the abused party, always quick to take offense. Rarely are they able to have healthy relationships, for they are in reality, the abusers. Their world centers around them, and any attempt by others to appease them, only contributes to the anti-social behavior.
Such behavior betrays a deep spiritual and psychological illness, one that is not easily healed. Such people feel empowered by making other people uncomfortable, and normal attempts at rapprochement often end in failure, for such people are always looking for ways to continue their control over others. Their illness is difficult to heal, for their pride and deep seated sense of superiority makes repentance difficult, for they simply don’t see themselves as having a problem.
 
It’s almost like a sizable portion of Trumpublicans can be fairly characterized as deplorable.

It’s almost like GTB calling another poster un-American for “divisive rhetoric” and then justifying Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric like this by “trying to understand him” is deplorable logic.

At the end of the day, people like GTB who say they “might” not support him based on (insert something terrible he does next) are just saying it to save face. They’re all in on the Trump 2020 train.
 
It's not possible to remain a Republican today without embracing a ton of self-deceptive and reality-bending rationalizations.

"Those racist Covington high school boys wearing MAGA hats assaulted a native american veteran who was peacefully protesting"

"If you like your doctor... you can keep your doctor"

"The attack on our embassy in Benghazi was the result of a spontaneous protest over a YouTube video"?

Where would we be today if we didn't have the Dem Party and *moderates* such as ConnorEl to keep everyone in line???

Nah, it’s not a reach. These people believe the stuff Obama did was as bad or worse than the stuff Trump is doing. They have no doubts Hillary lied about Benghazi and then the deep state helped her get away with , that Obama was born in Kenya but that the deep state forged his Hawaiian birth certificate, etc. ...And they believe that even if trump is lying about anything, it is righteous lying necessary to save America from itself.

Yep. That's a good summary. And if you challenge them on any of that, they'll point to any number of conservative news aggregator sites and call your NY Times and WaPo original reporting fake news.

In Michigan up to 9,000 conservatives joined a facebook page dedicated to opposing Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer that degenerated into attacks and death threats on Muslims, in particular Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, as well as Governor Whitmer and other female (especially Muslim female) politicians. Among the choice comments about Tlaib - "She needs a bullet between her eyes", "set that bitch on fire", "death to this bitch and her voters", "I wish someone would find this bitch in a dark alley." When it was announced that Tlaib would appear in an event in Michigan, one poster wrote that "I hope someone is waiting for her from a few hundred yards away with a scope ready to make that pink mist spray from her skull", and another poster offered to train him to shoot like that. They also made death threats against another Michigan Democratic Congresswoman, Elissa Slotkin, after falsely accusing her of pledging allegiance to dead Iranian General Soleimani. She "should be burned and raped", "off with her head", and she "should be hung in the streets for treason." The page's creator and administrator, Charlie Gillett, did not try to remove the death threats, but finally removed the page when reporters started asking him about it, saying that he "didn't want any repercussions" at his job. He also blamed the Democrats for the problems with the page.

Among the members of this civilized facebook page was Michigan GOP State Rep. Peter Lucido. When Allison Donahue, at 22 one of the youngest female journalists in the state capitol, tried to question Lucido about his membership on the page, he instead pointed to a visiting delegation from an all-boys Catholic high school standing nearby (they were from Lucido's alma mater) and told her "You should hang around! You could have a lot of fun with these boys - or they could have a lot of fun with you." When she complained about the remark, he told her "it was nothing personal" and that was just the way he talked to young women. The GOP leader in the Michigan State Senate recently called Gov. Whitmer "batshit crazy." Nice folks.
