Paula Deen's Contract Won't Be Renewed

Yeah but the problem is that most of the "journalists" I've read are reporting it that way.

Most of the ones I read have mentioned the n-word right along side the plantation wedding idea and her being unrepentant about her brother looking at porn at work.

I was out of town over the weekend so it may be the case that the coverage has evolved but in the first few days it was just the slur being reported.

There is now way that we are going to go down some PC slippery slope because way too many people would get caught up in it.

I'm fairly certain that the number of people that have used any slur at any point in their life in any context is going to be fairly high.

I grew up playing smear the queer. I didn't even know what the word meant.

Umm, excuse me, is this where [voice cracks] we are meeting for the OGBoards get together?...Wait, is that [voice cracks] NazTDeac?

We called it rack the man. Didn't realize our Eastern NC small town was so progressive.

You keep on forgetting the most important part of this....she planned a PLANTATION WEDDING for her brother's wedding, complete with slave waiters.

She put together something that cost ten of thousands of dollars that glorified keeping slaves.

Get over her using the Nword. This is worse than if she used the Nword fifty times in front of audiences.

A Plantation wedding?

Those bastards

Agree. How significant were her ratings now anyway? It could have been as simple as the Food Network just crunching the numbers to realize the PR campaign would never be worth it.

I would have guessed that it was because they didn't want to pay for her health insurance any longer.

Rube and Ph are right - this is a financial decision on retaining expensive talent who has already peaked, whose time has come and gone.

so in summary, the food network is being niggardly?

She briefly discussed the wedding, dismissed it, and it never happened. Food Network had to be stoked-they were able to cook up plausible excuses to avoid renewing a contract that was no longer working for them. If Deen was pulling in new, younger viewers and new ad revenue, they would have had a much tougher decision to make. Had the wedding occurred as discussed, she would have been let go no matter how much her show was making. Vague references to using the N word a long time ago are extremely convenient to get out of a no longer profitable and viable business relationship.

I cringe now looking back to what everybody called some of the games we played growing up in small town North Carolina.

the term queer in "smear the queer" isn't homophobic, it's just a catchy name. Queer being the odd man out...i.e. the guy who has the ball

Growing up in the '70s, the older boys would play this game in one of their backyards called, The Germans and the Jews.

In a nutshell, the younger, weaker, nerdier kids were forced to ride their bikes around the circumference of the backyard (you could not alter your path) while the older boys would push (roll) large car tires in their path to try to knock them off the bike.

Guess which role my friends and I played?

You mean the guy that has the ball in his hands.

I love that game

She's on the wrong side of several trends. Unhealthy food, a cooking show instead of a reality cooking competition, older instead of younger, southern instead of metropolitan.

What's that?

So now THIS is wrong too? Is it OK if you turn the volume down?
