Prediction Thread: UMBC @ Wake Forest - 8pm on ESPN3

It's a win. The Deacs advantage going into the game was the frontline and they delivered. Thomas with 21/17, Dinos with 19/16 and Collins with 10/7. Wonder if Collins can perform against the big boys. He has shown well against limited talent. Crawford looked like a frosh PG in his first varsity game with too much responsibility. Hope the late FT's help his confidence. Wilbekin and McClinton looked like last year. Moore is big.

Can't comment on the Wake defense because I did not see any played. They didn't get back in transition. They didn't stay in front of their counterpart. They were lazy on switches and then got lost or out of position. No pride. None. If this is what Manning is going to hang his hat on, he should be embarrassed. I would like to think it was first game whatever, but I saw too much of this last year. Disappointing.

So since are guards are playing like sh!t and we didn't sign Harry F'ing Dookie Giles when do we give Childress his walking papers

Childress still doesn't have bodies at guard to work with. Wilbekin, Crawford are the only two recruited guards who are playing. VanHorn is apparently the best of the walkons so he has a 'ship this year. Ya gotta practice against good to get better. If all is going as it should, the Wake team will look better once CMM is healthy. Senior point guards are better than freshmen, except in very, very rare cases.2015-2016 WFU is not one of those.

Codi, get well soon!!!!

Seriously was DM trying to send some sort of message to Collins or is he in bad shape? Notwithstanding some bad plays, he was a difference maker on both ends of the court. So why didn't he play more?

Two things:
1) He's primarily spelling Thomas and Dinos, who both had outstanding games.
2) All that production was in the 2nd half. Collins had zero points and zero rebounds in five minutes of action in the first half. He played out of his mind in the 6 minutes he played in the 2nd, for sure. Impressive run.

Are the two teams dedicating this game to the memory of Buzz? Maybe next year we can invite Colorado and Air Force too and have a kind of Buzz Memorial Tournament, where the loser gets the trophy.

Did you read Odom's book?

Our best player is Thomas, then Dinos, then CMM, then Crab, then Collins. In fact, that should be our starting lineup... CMM, Crab, Collins, Dinos, Thomas.

CMM behind Dinos, that's a joke right?

Coaching and talent no different from past few years. This was close to a "Stetson". I really don't think our roster is better than UMBC and they sure can shoot better. Give them Dinos and UMBC probably wins by 15. I can not understand how we continually have worse shooting that a terrible D-1 teams.

Yep.

Thought we were going to name the score?

People who are praising Mitoglou need to chill out. 16 boards is great and all, but he gave up about 30 points on bad D to score 19. He and Crawford were the biggest reasons our defense sucked.

If his defensive effort doesn't get better, it will be hard to play him.

When you are a team with such limited options, as Wake is right now, none of that should matter. Your best players should play. There is no reason why Collins can't play with Devin and Dinos.

Yes there is. None of them can guard anybody outside of the post.

And you're going to play who instead of Dinos?

couple of additional thoughts:

1, Not a whine as we will have to adjust (and play much better), but the officiating affected our defense. What previously worked (hand-checking, bodying up, hedging and step ins) was not allowed last night. Even several good defensive plays were flagged for fouls (thought Dino's got some bad calls -- but we were given some bad calls too). If they are going to call it that way we have to adjust and protect the rim much better. Shot blockers will be key if the officiating continues in this manner -- love to see this officiating style called against Dook. Our players had the deer in the head lights look last night allowing way too many blow bys and did not adjust during the game. Last year and the years before, DT would have fouled out of this game or yelled at the ref (he may have been close). Manning's hands are tied with injury / suspensions, but more so on the guard side than bigs -- the guards played very tentative on defense, just not acceptable. As thin as we are at guard right now this is an issue. To paraphrase a great man, "our defense wasn't exactly the Russians at Stalingrad".
2. Even though we drew a ton of fouls on them, I don't think we drove (guards especially) effective enough. Devin and John Collins continued to make nice moves to the basket -- but not enough for my taste. Part of this is due to our inability to create 3 point shots to unpack the middle, but part of this is the dribble / finish capabilities --- CMM will be a welcome addition on penetration and Crab will give another outside threat. It is a shame that McClinton does not have an intermediate to longer-range game, this would help.
3. Really encouraged by what we are seeing from the freshman --- all of them. They are freshmen though and will often play as such. IF we can get through this stretch the early extra time will be invaluable.
4. Free throw shooting. One game doesn't make a trend, but finally. Hope CMM worked on his a ton too. 76.7%! Saved the game.
5. We need to take more advantage of our size --- especially on teams like these. That said's the bigs are defensive liabilities against fast SG and SF's. Need to design to that advantage.
6. Rebounding is so much better under this regime.

Sure there's more, lot's of things for Manning to work on --- this team (even before the injury / suspension) will be a work in progress all season.
