Pro Life / Pro Choice Debate

Fucking A…I live in Ala-fucking-bama and have two young daughters. I have no idea what I’m supposed to tell them.

I had my first volunteer shift as a patient escort yesterday - it was quiet and not very busy and I’m now wondering what comes next. Georgia doesn’t have a trigger law, but we do have a heartbeat bill that is currently stayed (but presumably the stay will be lifted in the next few days). This is just so sad (but wholly unsurprising).

I also live in Alabama. It has, unfortunately, proven to be as backwards and vile as it's reputation. I move next week. I can't even imagine raising my young daughters here. NC may not be perfect, but it's light years ahead of Alabama

Lots of fuck yous to go around today, but big fuck yous today to the Susans -- Sarandon and Collins.

Next step is anti-abortion states criminalizing women going out of state for an abortion

Yeah it’s going to be open season for states coming up with the most ridiculous laws possible, or we might already be there. I don’t see how they will legally prosecute a “crime” that takes place in another state but then again never thought it would get to this place either. I mean there are already triggers where it’s just an escalation of you get a 10,000 fine, and then the state you got it in will fine you for trying to fine and so forth.

I told my 13 year old daughter weeks ago that the Republicans were going to take away the right to have an abortion and that I wanted her to know that I would always take care of her if she needed. That I would fly her to New York or Canada or where ever to get her the health care she needed or wanted and she never has to feel shame or be scared because I’ll always be here to help her. And she said “But dad I’m a lesbian, I won’t ever get accidentally pregnant” and I said “Boys can be aggressive and you never know what going to happen except that I’ll be here for you.”

I dont know how old you kids are, but talking to them about this, if they are old enough to know what an abortion is and what this decision means, is probably a good idea.

Tell them that Auntie K. in North Carolina will take care of them if they need to visit as long as we can keep NC out of the hands of the Christian Right.

I mean this sincerely, if any of your kids ever need to take a trip to NC, message me and I'll do whatever needs to be done.

Mine are younger than 13, but the older is on the cusp of needing “the talk”. Obviously, today’s news has to be included in that. It’s one thing to talk to them about personal responsibility WRT to consensual sex and protection, but that’s not the whole story here. What am I supposed to say about other scenarios? “Don’t get raped” isn’t exactly parent-of-the-year advice.

This is going to have huge ramifications for abortion access even in states without overly restrictive laws. NC will be the only state in the south with access to abortion, so the few clinics that still exist here will be overwhelmed. In this scenario, it is going to be the best resourced individuals that will be getting access with many under-resourced individuals excluded from care.
