Redskins Name Change Thread

Tomahawk chop is tricky because it doesn't really have to be team sanctioned to live on. You can't stop tens of thousands of idiots from doing that if they really want to. Chief Wahoo, yeah, I think we've already seen the Indians pull back from that.

The Braves could do a lot to reduce it - including not handing out foam tomahawks, not playing the music/graphics.

Whenever someone complains about “tyranny of the minority,” you know they’re just saying they support tyranny from the majority.

Wow, what a brilliant thinker. Are you related to Thomas Jefferson?

The founding fathers spoke of the tyranny of the majority but they could not have foreseen the mass hysteria of the woke generation. In America we have republican rule which the Founders hoped would preserve the rights of minorities not a free wheeling democracy as presented by the name changers and statue destroyers. Even John Calhoun noted that the concurrence of various portions of the community are a prerequisite of constitutional government. What we see now is mob rule

A mob led by FedEx and Nike?

I haven't been to a Braves game in years. Do they still hand out foam tomahawks? I know they did in the 90s during the World Series years. I think I actually still have one of those somewhere.

Most people don't know that the Braves version of the tomahawk chop began when Deion Sanders was playing for the Braves. There are a ton of FSU alums in Atlanta and they would do the chop, without foam tomahawks or any music, when Deion came to the plate. I was at some of the early chop games where that happened. The Braves have certainly perpetuated it, though.

During the playoffs last year the Braves pulled back on the chop after an opposing player complained.

It’s a bit odd to me that anyone can think it’s a minority of Americans that are sick of racist and insulting names. It seems pretty clear that’s the majority stance at this point. It’s just that typically the majority doesn’t care to push the issue that much because there are competing priorities in life. Currently, though, people are more focused on fixing these problems and therefore you see a lot happening at once.

But to think this is a small minority imposing its will on the majority is crazy.

Good post.

We’ve gone from “that sucks but what are you doing to do” to “screw that, let’s do something.”

The continuing rise of social media amplifies voices to maximize their impact as well.

It may also help that many brands are fairly limited in how they can increase profits during this pandemic which allows other efforts to become priorities.

For example, Nike stands to gain quite a bit if there is all of a sudden a new NFL mascot and logo. Same goes for FedEx making the deliveries. Same goes for retailers, particularly DC area retailers.

Are you referring to the founding fathers that were cool with owning other humans?

You might want to do a bit of research: USAGE NOTE FOR REDSKIN
The date and origin of this term is in dispute. Evidence seems to show that in the 1760s, French colonists in the Mississippi Valley translated a Native American spoken term into the French language as peau rouge , which was then translated into English as redskin. Through the early part of the 19th century, American Indians continued to use their native word self-referentially, and it was translated into spoken and written English as redskin with no derogatory connotations, even as a term of respect. However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, within the historical context of white-Indian hostilities, use of the term redskin was associated with attitudes of contempt and condescension. By the 1960s, redskin had declined in use; because of heightened cultural sensitivities, it was perceived as offensive. Yet use of the term survives in the names of some sports teams.......................Hail to the Redskins.

From your source, this (at best) evolved into a way of referring to Native Americans that was/is not benign. You want to take another stab at it Jefferson?

What do you think would happen if Dutch went to a Cherokee or Oneida or Hopi or Lakota tribal meeting and started calling his hosts "redskins"?

Snyder should be able to afford to a licensing agreement with UC Santa Cruz to name his team the Banana Slugs.

Get rid of the Washington Redskins name! New name: DC Swampdwellers! Mascot could be a combo of Pelosi/Schumer and they could scream come to DC and do nothing for 40 years!

Call them the DC Senators. The mascots will be a black man and a black woman wearing jerseys with #51 and #52 on the back.
